Carroll opens season with win

BY JON MCGILLIVRAY
Wichita Eagle correspondent

In a matchup of two teams expected to contend for the City League wrestling title, Bishop Carroll defeated Heights 51-21 Thursday night at Heights.

The dual victory keeps Carroll's unbeaten streak alive at 85. The Eagles are seeking their seventh straight league title.

Coach Darian Eshelman earns his first dual victory at Carroll after spending 15 seasons at Rose Hill, the past two as head coach.

"It was a long time coming and I'm definitely glad that it turned out well. I'm glad to kick the season off," he said.

Eshelman said he wasn't nervous for the Eagles' opener, but was a little concerned about his wrestlers, who competed in football and have only had three days of wrestling practice.

"I feel really good with our kids and their work ethic in the room, but my nerves come when we're not quite prepared like we want to be," he said.

"Right now it's going to take us a couple weeks to get prepared like we want to be."

The first four matches ended in pins as Carroll opened up an early 18-6 lead behind victories from Dylan Penka at 103 pounds, Jordan Keller at 119 and John Keller at 125. Heights' Daniel Deshazer pinned Keaton Dugan at 112 pounds.

After Carroll's Bradley Toon beat CJ Jonker 11-4 at 130 pounds, Heights' Kendric Maple pulled the Falcons to within 21-12 with a pin of Beau Hentzen 14 seconds into the third round at 135 pounds.

The teams split the next two matches then Heights' Jordan Moore pinned Logan Winter at 152 pounds to get the Falcons within six points at 27-21.

Carroll won the final five matches for the 30-point final margin of victory.

Heights coach Todd Sacquitne said opening the schedule with the Eagles was a challenge for his team.

"Carroll's a tough school to open up with, they're a nationally ranked team. I thought we came out, were aggressive and got after it and wrestled a really good dual," he said.

The most entertaining match of the night came at 171 pounds between Carroll's Devon Keith and Heights' Kody Haskins.

Haskins scored the first two points with a takedown, but was quickly reversed by Keith and the match was tied at 2.

The final minute of the opening round saw a flurry of action with both wrestlers nearly pinning the other and Keith taking a 9-6 lead into the second round.

Keith grabbed control early in the second before finally pinning Haskins with 1:24 remaining in the period.

Most of the football players did not wrestle. Coach gave them two days off after the State finals so they have only attended one practice. Jake Cole and Tony Marquez wrestled only because BC does not have any solid JV wrestlers behind them. Although they both won, you could tell they had only gone to one practice.

BC plans to have Mitch Arnold, Tanner Cody, and Tim Chadd back in the line-up for Saturday's dual tournament at Valley Center.
