Just wondering what some consider to be highlight momements in 4A wresting?....

A favorite moment of mine would be Taplin's regional finals match his junior year.

I would not call it a highlight but a very scary moment. It had the whole gym very still.
At the end of the 103 lbs. finals which was one of the most exciting finals @ Eudora. The young man from Abilene was what appeared to be convulsions. He was down for what seemed like 15-20 minutes. I was looking at all the wrestlers while he was being looked at. They were all very concerned and shocked at what they were seeing. We went from a frenzied crowd to dead silence. I am happy to say that the Eudora people gave him a chance to recover and take his spot atop the podium. I hope he and his family are all well and OK. Good luck all at state.

Unfortunately I was not able to attend, but Heard that when Kevin Callahan broke the state record for wins, he got a standing ovation from the crowd. Now I think that is a big highlight for 4a! Wish I could have been there.

He did. It was announced right after his match and everyone in the gym honored him. In my opinion, THIS is the most important record a wrestler can try to obtain. And to top it all of, he was a class act on the mat and after the announcement.

At the end of the Perry Regional they gave one of their amazing championship brackets and a special award to a Concordia wrestler who has some sort of physical disability (i'm not sure exactly what) for showing so much guts and determination to step out on the mat and wrestle. The whole crowd stood up and cheered for him and you can tell he really appreciated and so did everyone in that gym. I love to see/hear about kids like him who overcome, they are truly an inspiration.

Are you sure it was Concordia and not Marysville? Marysville has a wrestler who has Cerebral Palsy (sp?) and has wrestled since 7th grade. He always inspires me to watch and the dude does have some strong upper arm strength! I did not know that Concordia had a wrestler with a physical disability too.

That's right, I got my red teams mixed up. Thanks for the correction.

I believe that he already has azma (i know thats not how u spell it but idk how to anyway) and i talked to his mom and brother and it seemed to be how exhausted he was from the match and more than likely the shock he just won the regional tournament. He stopped breathing and his muscles started going into contractions. Once removed from the mat the EMT's gave him oxygen and let him try to get his breath back. Even 20-30 minutes after he still looked pale as could be and just beat. A very scary thing for the wrestler and the wrestling community but i spoke to his mother tonight and he is doing a lot better and is going to get checked out tomorrow (MRI and cat scan) just for precautions. She also said that he wasnt very happy about that and said no matter what the doc said that he would wrestle in the state tournament! The kid sure does love the sport

That's right. I remembered it was Wamego not Marysville too. Anyway, it is really nice to see him wrestle all these years and to watch the other wrestlers from Wamego help him to and from the mat.

I wouldn’t call it a highlight because I am from Concordia but a crazy moment was when Chris Kearn got called for stalling in the state finals against Jesse Strawn with a second left to go into overtime.

That was one of the best matches I have ever seen.

It should have gone to OT. They wrestled again at nationals that year, and Strawn won fairly easily...7-3 or something like that.

i would have to agree with Callahan his brother winning his 167th match and becoming the state wins leader had to be pretty awesome.

The match with Strawn and Kern at thier Regional was even better.
In my opinion stalling is not called enough during the season. Then when the kids get to state, I believe they (wrestlers) dont know why they get it called. The action SHOULD be pushed and the wrestler who is trying to push the action should be rewarded. Its all on which side of the W you stand on that makes it a good call or bad. Some say its SMART wrestling and some say its STALLING.
Being a REF is a thankless job for the most part. But the good ones do stand out.

Yeah Shelstin that match should have went to O.T. if it had the outcome of that match would have been alittle different.

I think that Jesse Strawn is a GREAT kid and a GREAT athlete. Still, I thought that Kern pushed the chamionship match a little harder than Jesse until the final moments. You could tell that Strawn did NOT want to win that match on a penalty point. It was one of the best high school matches that I can remember. Had it gone to OT, I think Strawn would have won, but they were both pretty much done at the end of regulation. Who knows?
