This is my sons last year of wrestling 6 and under. Next season he will move up to 8 and under but will not be allowed to compete at state because he is a big boy 4'8" and 130 pounds as of now. I am sure he will grow between now and next season. With 8 and unders top weight at state being 125 I dont see any other options but to just not wrestle next season. I refuse to make him have to move up to 10 and under just so he can wrestle and get the crap kicked out of him.

Is he in shape, or could he possibly benefit from efforts to get down to 125 over the course of the next year? I'm not trying to be mean, some kids are just big kids, and some probably should lose some weight for their own good.

No he is not fit but is a little on the chubby side like most other kids this age and weight. I am totally against making him cut weight. And who knows what he is going to weigh a year from now when he is an 8 and under.

There is a big difference between cutting weight and becoming healthier. If he truly has weight to give, a healthy diet and exercise is appropriate whether he wrestles next year or not. Use wrestling as a motivation to get in better shape during the off season. It doesn't have to be miserable. A few small changes over a long period of time can make a big difference. You may find that a different mindset is a good thing for the whole family.
I would strongly encourage you to not quit wrestling for a reason like this.

My oldest son weighed in at 94lbs when he walked into the practice room at 6yrs old. By the end of that season he was 85lbs. The next year he wrestled 8&u 88lbs & had very little trouble making it. The next year he was 88&u again & he was still just a little chubby. This year he was 90 & under & was weighing in at 85.8 or about at tournaments. I asked him if he wanted to go to districts at 85 or 90. He said 85 he has not had any sweets, pop, ect for a month now & is making 85. He looks better than he has in his life & still has just a little fat around his mid section. This was all done by eating right no skipping meals no starving him no dehydration. My family Has been eating better because of this & we have all benifited from it. Just wanted to throw this out there to let people know it can be done.
