I deleted my own post, because I thought it seemed insensitive.

I truly admire people who have the talent and courage to sing the National Anthem at sporting events.

However:

It does irritate me ever so slightly that many people who sing the National Anthem use so much artistic license with the tune.
It is in fact the National Anthem and worthy of our respect. It is not a country and western song, or a pop song.

I agree. I am also surprised at how many people don't put their hand over their hearts.

I know that I don't put my hand over my heart! I do though stand at attention! That's the military in me!

Do you salute the flag when standing at attention ? Some may confuse standing at attention without your hand over your heart or saluting the flag as just standing ? Just a question, not questioning your patriotism.

How people show their respect, or lack thereof, seems to me to be counter to what the flag or anthem in part stands for. There are many people, some for religious reasons that will not say the pledge or place their hand over their heart during the anthem; however, to stand out of respect is appropriate even to most of them. I find it far more dangerous to dictate what is, and is not respect for some individuals than the liberty that a few may take. I do think that as long as a person shows respect for those in attendance then we should focus on our own relationship to the flag and anthem as opposed to being concerned about others. I will say on this issue, it does bother me when individuals refuse to uncover their hats, garments and so forth.

All of that said, I kind of wonder about the appropriateness of this discussion on a kids wrestling forum. It may be better suited for the other forums.
