Wrestling Places 12 at Colby Tournament
Baker, McKain Finish First

Kearney, Neb. – The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling saw began the 2008-09 season this past Saturday as mainly redshirt and true freshmen competed in the inaugural Daniel Cormier Open at Colby C.C. in Colby, Kans.

UNK had 12 place in the top four with sophomore Tyler Baker (141 lbs.) and Justin McKain (197 lbs.) winning their brackets. Wyoming, Fort Hays State, Newman (Kans.), York and the host Colby Trojans were the other school competing in the non-team scoring tournament.

Baker (Hoxie, Kans.), who spent one year at Colby before joining the Lopers in January, had two tech falls and a major decision over teammate Drew Etherton (Lincoln East), 12-2, to place first at 141 lbs.

At 197 lbs., junior Derek Ross (St. Francis, Kans.) rebounded from an upset loss in the first round by recording three straight falls to place third. His first two pins took less then a minute and then he put Cliff Leonhardt of Colby on his back at 3:53.

Ross is ranked sixth in the national preseason polls.

UNK will hold its annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage this Saturday in Cushing starting at 5:00 p.m. No admission will be charged.
