OPEN TOURNAMENT The only way you could do a true Grand State Championship Individual and/or team. It would be one massive OPEN tournament (individual and/or team) over several days. You can not take the top 4 from each HS classification and give them an automatic pass to the top 16 in the state. From year to year weight class depth varies through out the state. In any given year the top eight in a weight may all be from the same region, HS classification, city, team (that is a stretch), club, county, metro, whereever. That is it for me on this topic! Except - Every match must end in a fall and there is no time limit in a match! That is my format.

In a field of 64 teams at the NCAA's in 2007 - Stanford University had 1 national champ Brian Perry beat Johnny Hendricks 4-3 and Stanford had a seventh place finish by Tanner Gardner who pinned Iowa's Charlie Flack in 2:41. Using the NCAA scoring system Stanford’s team finished 32nd with a team point total of 16. Minnesota won the team title (98 points) with 1 national champ and 4 other AA's. Minnesota's 5 other guys did not AA but they won 2 and 3 matches with some pin points in there but did not place. They beat Iowa State (88.5) by 9.5 points for the team title. Iowa State had 3 finalist, 1 champ one other AA and 5 other guys did not AA but scored team points. Oklahoma had 1 finalist (2nd) no other AA's and tied for 22nd with 2 other teams. Guys that did not AA helped their team total and scored 13 more points than Stanford University who had a Champ and 1 AA. Remember, this is in a field with only 10 weight classes not 14. This type of individual/team tournament format outcome would change in team scores if more collegiate classes (DII, DIII, NAIA, JOCO) were allowed to attend. It is true that a team title can be won without having a champ. It is also true a team can place high with a few individuals. It normally comes down to team depth when winning team titles. 7 - 3rd place from one team will not beat 14 - 4th placers from another team for the team title. Numbers can be a funny thing they can tell you what you want to hear. Kind of like all these companies that want us to bail them out. I won't get started on that.

In 2007 Mark Perry from Iowa defeated Johny Hendricks in the 165 lbs. finals. In 2004 Stanford had a National Champion at 157 lbs. when Matt Gentry defeated Jake Percival from Ohio University.

Sorry Richard - I just went off the NCAA Sheet for scores on the internet. I was just trying to make a point of emphasis on team scoring. It says Iowa placed 8th that year with 57 points. It looks like their depth has improved the last 2 years. But your corrections are always welcome. You might want to call the NCAA and have them update their website.

My passion for a Grand State is I would just like to coach and experience some more great wrestling. There will always be a few sleepers and underdogs that rise to the top. Plus I always love watching the back side matches where the wrestlers know one more loss means they are out. Some fantastic wrestling takes place, in these matches, at both regionals and state, and I have had the pleasure to watch many fine young men pour their hearts into the matches of their lives.

i agree, the finals would be fairly easy to predict. sure there would be a couple of upsets, as alsways. the battles for third through sixth, would be awesome to watch, with the caliber of the competitors. lets do it, someone front the money and make it an invite. i'm sure you could fill the brackets even if there are "no shows". while you are at it have an 8 team dual state tournament the next day, and a real college football playoff, a new car.... sorry felt like a letter to santa for a minute. the question is how serious about this are we?

It would take $20 to $25 entry fee per wrestler. It might be more if it is 2 day tournament with 32 man brackets. Somebrackets could be bigger with pigtails coming in. Those in the middle of the bell curve. It could be done - but I am not sure of the KSHAA rules. It would need to be 1 or 2 weeks after "regular" various class state tournaments. Kids could only wrestle in the weight they wrestled at their class state tournament with 4 or 5 pound allowance above scratch weight. If 2 day tournament 2 weigh-ins on first day morning and night or weigh-ins the night before the first day and the night of the first day. With additional pound given for second weighs-in. No morning weigh-in 2nd day of action. Volunteer based would be a huge plus to make it a nice event. No team scores would be kept kids could practice with whatever club they want. The problem I see is that the timimg and conflicts with kids subs. district & state tournament.

You would have to do it in Salina or Wichita to pull from every corner of the state. It would have to be the weekend after state and it would have to be a two day tournament. KSHSAA wouldn't have a say as long as underclassmen were not coached by their HS coach or utilizing school equipment.
As stated many times before on this forum, this would be nice to have tournament (it has been tried before) but it wouldn't carry the same weight as a KSHSAA Sanctioned Grand State. If it were sanctioned coaches would be involved, practices would happen and kids would show up. Wihtout it being a true HS event you would lose 30% of the top four placers and that is what people would be paying to see. They want to see the best wrestle the best from each class.
