Eagle junior wins Silver Lake invitational By Brent Maycock The Capital-Journal Published Sunday, February 08, 2009 SILVER LAKE — The task was daunting, but not an impossible one in Brett LaMar's mind.
"I knew I could beat them — I just made a couple of mistakes at Beloit," LaMar said.
At last month's Beloit Invitational, the Silver Lake junior finished fourth, losing to both Blaine Smith of Salina South and Logan Singular of Clay Center. LaMar got a shot at revenge with both his 119-pound rivals and made the most of it Saturday at the Silver Lake Invitational.
LaMar first took a 5-1 double-overtime decision against Smith in the semifinals and then knocked off Singular 4-0 in the championship for his second straight home tournament title.
"It motivated me a lot," LaMar said of the losses — a 4-3 decision in the Beloit semifinals and a 2-0 loss to Singular in the third-place match. "I had a little bit of a scuffle with them at Beloit, and I just really wanted to pay them back."
LaMar was one of three Eagles to capture titles Saturday on their home mats. Silver Lake honored its four seniors before the finals and then two of them went out and made their home finale a golden one.
Dustin Zahorsky's title at 140 pounds wasn't much of a surprise. A defending state champion and the top-ranked wrestler in Class 3A at his weight, Zahorsky had no trouble with Salina South's Jason Seibel, taking a 5-1 victory to improve to 28-1.
Tyler White's title at 130 pounds might classify as a pleasant surprise. White had pinned his finals foe, Seaman's Cole Schreiner, in an earlier meeting this year, so his 7-5 victory perhaps wasn't totally unexpected.
Only the championship appearance was the first for White this season and the tournament title was the first of his career.
"Being a senior this year, I hadn't made it to the finals yet," White said. "I kept making it to the semifinals, but couldn't get any further. My first tournament title, that kind of completed this year. It makes it special and rewarding."
Silver Lake scored 173 points and finished runner-up as a team to meet champion Clay Center, which racked up 252 points on the strength of five individual champions. That included a victory by Tyler Anderson in the marquee showdown of the day in the 135-pound finals. Anderson entered the finals undefeated (28-0), while his opponent, Louisburg's Bryce Hood owned a 29-1 mark.
The match belonged to Anderson, who took an 8-4 victory. Joining him as Tiger champions were Colton Easterberg (145), Zach Anderson (160), Chance Davis (171) and Joel Marrs (189)
LaMar kept Singular from making it six champions for Clay Center. After a scoreless first period, he scored all the points he needed with a reversal with 45 seconds left in the second period. LaMar kept Singular down and then sealed the victory with a takedown 30 seconds into the final period.
"I wanted to get through the first period 0-0 and then see what he gave me in the other two," LaMar said. "It really paid off getting that reversal and then he made just one mistake in the third."
Seaman claimed two champions with Brett Simmons topping Silver Lake's Jason Schroeder 4-3 in the 112 final and Rick Singer winning at 215.
Team scores Clay Center 252, Silver Lake 173, Prairie View 136.5, Seaman 131.5, Salina South 111, Louisburg 95, Leavenworth 93, Rossville 77, Paola 70.5, Chase County 68, Wamego 58, Doniphan West 36.5, Atchison 17, St. Marys 14, Wabaunsee 13.

Great Tournament Harry. It has to be one of the top run tournaments in the state. Everything ran quickly and to be back at home by around 5:00 was great. I have been going to high school tournaments for the last 9 years and if I was school looking to add another quality tournament to their schedule this would be the one. Thanks for all you do for the kids and parents.
