Citizens of Goodland are very excited about having Junior College Wrestling starting in 2010-2011, and with the hiring of Steve Lampe. How long before the program can be competitive at the national level with Lampe running the program? My thoughts 2 to 5 years.

I've heard that they will not be affiliated with the KJCCC. But if that's the case definetly a major draw over similar Kansas Community Colleges, as they can only offer tuition & books vs. a full ride.

don't know why you would say it is a major draw over other schools. It is only a technical school. So what if they can offer more than kjcc schools. Tell that to Brown Mackie out of Salina. They aren't any better than other Junior College schools in kansas.

I don't know why you wouldn't think being able to offer a full ride is a major draw over other schools who can't. Take a kid who has to choose between 2 solid programs but 1 tells him everything is paid for and the other tells him he has to come up with the money for everything else besides tuition and books. If you ask me the college who can keep money in the athlete's pocket has the advantage.

You do know that it is a technical college? It does not offer all the classes and programs that colby or pratt might offer. So if you have a kid who might want to go into education, then what classes are they going to take. They might have some of the core classes, but they won't have more specific classes. What if they want to go into veterinary asst. or physical therapy asst. Do you think they have that there or would it be better for them to go to a school that has some of those classes? More is not always better or what people want. And from your post you didn't mention anything about education, so it must not be a big thing. If not, then go where ever pays you the most, or you don't have to pay anything.

Bones you can earn the same associates degree at a technical school as you would at a regular juco. Trust me my buddy went to Beloit for auto mechanics and ended up with an associates of science, the same degree I have from a Kansas JUCO.
They will get the same general education courses as well as learn a specific trade if they wish.

They are going to be adding more courses but not sure what they will be, and whether its a Tech College or Juco, both offer good courses. Bottom line is, there is another option for local kids to wrestle at the junior college level.

Bones. I am totally aware Northwest Kansas Technical College is indeed a technical college. My point is it an advantage for NWKTC not to join the Jayhawk so they can offer more than tuition and books. I'm not saying Goodland will have it easy in regards to recruiting. Actually I think it will be the opposite and they will be at a disadvantage until they can offer programs any other juco does. That being said I know Goodland is heading towards that but it is not going to happen over night. It's going to be a process but Goodland has laid the foundation by adding wrestling and in hiring a great coach. Steve Lampe has been dedicated to coaching and the sport of wrestling in general longer than most of us have been on this earth. I'll agree with you Bones "more is not always better or what people want" but if you can offer an equal education which I mentioned Goodland is working on and a full ride that is better than tuition and books to most athletes.

Not every wrestler is interested in a traditional college education. I know of a couple who were interested in wrestling in college, but wanted a "trade" school. I think this is a good option for them.

My last reply was to the funny comment about the curriculum the school would need (which I did't see the humor). Any way I couldn't agree with you more Bronco Wrestler. Lampe will have this program at a high level soon, I talked to him last week he's excited.

What will happen to the Colby program? I sure hope that coach Lampe will fight for a program that had buttered his bread fo 30 years. Time will tell. Its an exciting time for Kansas wrestling with the addition of Baker, WSU and Goodland, but to loose a program in Kansas is hopefully not the outcome of this "opportunity" for coach Lampe.
PS MATT-FAN- plenty of good wrestlers here in the heartland. There is no need to go overseas to get them at cost of the local taxpayer in these rough economic times.

Mike I agree, I would hate to see Colby lose it's wrestling program, the more college wrestling programs we have in the state of kansas can only do possitive things for the sport of wrestling here in Kansas. I am looking forward to being able to watch it here in Goodland, and yes the more local kids and Kansas kids that can be recruited here I am totaly in favor of. But we all know that Steve has had some good luck with recruits from other countries and it has given him good national notarity.
