The Jackrabbit wrestling team held its fall wrestling clinic, Saturday, featuring two-time All-American Ty Eustice as the keynote speaker. Thirty-one athletes and numerous coaches were on hand for the event.

"Ty did an excellent job," said head wrestling coach Jason Liles. "He showed me that he knows how to break down the basics and I think it was really good for our participants and our athletes. I think everyone enjoyed the clinic because of his expertise."

The Jacks also hosted their annual wrestle-offs. Weston Blasius picked up a pair wins to lead SDSU. Tyler Sorenson notched the biggest win of the day, winning 16-4 over Scott Elliott.

The Jacks return to the mat Saturday as they host the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open beginning at 9 a.m. in Frost Arena.

Weston Blasius dec. Nick Flynn, 5-4

Tyler Sorenson maj. dec. Scott Elliot, 16-4

Nick Flynn dec. Nick Hagar, 7-5

I am not sure what these wrestle-offs mean. Elliott is listed on the roster at 174 and Sorenson is listed at 197. I wonder if they are closer in weight at this time. Also, Blasius is not listed on the current roster. Looks like he was a Jr in 2007. Sounds like more of an exhibition than a wrestle-off.

Think Coach Liles uses this scrimmage plus the first two open tournments to set his line up. SDSU hosts the Daktronics Open next week. Coach Liles will use the results of the scrimmage and open to set the lineup for SDSU's dual with Iowa State on 12 Nov.

Elliot will most likely wrestle at 184lbs and work his way down to 174lbs around mid-season. Sorenson will wrestle at the 197 spot and is currently ranked 11th in the country. Think his opponent at ISU is #1.

Nick certified at 149lbs but don't think he will be able to pull the weight. Nick had trouble making weight a couple of times last year at 149lbs. Nick won the scrimmage against Nick Hagar at 149lbs. Hagar is freshman out of Wisconsin. A 4 time state champ and couple time Fargo champ. I would think Hagar will start at 149lbs. Nick lost a close one to Weston Blasius at 157lbs. Blasius is a returning Senior who started for the Jack at 157lbs last year. Nick will most likely share time with Blasius at 157lbs.

Thanks for the info. UNO will have several wrestlers at the Daktronincs next Saturday. I believe Daktronics was the only event they did not webcast last year. I am hoping they have enough wrestlers participate that they decide to webcast from SD this year. If they do, I'll post the link.
