Does anyone have reservations at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Topeka that they are not going to use? We are interested in getting 1-8 rooms in the hotel. Please e mail me at jeffroberts@rainbowtel.net if you are going to give up reservations.

If there is an extra room, I'm interested as well.

If there are extra rooms they should go back to the hotel so they can be distributed by the hotel to the people that have been on a waiting list for a year!

Sorry, no disrespect intended. But the reservation system for the Capital Plaza is a joke. A few teams have contracts for all the rooms. If they can't use them they sub-contract them out or turn them back in. Then the next year they get the same large number of rooms on contract, even though many of the teams have no prayer of ever being able to use them. I would guess most of the big team "contracts" have at least 5 extra rooms each that even if most all their kids qualify they couldn't use.

Basically they have insurance in the 2% chance they might need those last 5 rooms or so. That blocks everyone else out. I am sorry but you have hit a sore spot with me. Last year we had 3 rooms in the capital plaza that were turned back in and tried to get a contract on them on the Sunday after state for this year, and were told those rooms were put on contract to the club that originally had them but did not use them. Now why would they get preference over me when I had just paid the hotel $600.00 and the original contract holder could not fullfill thier obligation?

Those rooms are such a premium that in my opinion if a club does not use them they should lose the right to them for the next year. As is you will never get a room for that weekend unless you get an in with the few clubs that have all the contacts now, or you get lucky and get the leftovers. And that is not the way it should be. If a club does not keep the commitment for the number of rooms they should not be able to get them for the next year.

Now how sub-contracting is handled I don't know, but it would at least be a start to have any rooms turned back in and not used not be offered back on contract.

Just my opinion, I know the clubs with all the rooms will think they got the contracts why would they not get them all back, but it's just not a equitable system.

I am on the list, they just couldn't tell me whether or not I was going to get a room. Seems like they won't know until that Thursday if people are going to use the rooms they reserved, by then I will have to use the reservations I have at another hotel.

I think a letter to the Better Business Bureau and the Topeka Board of Tourism might be in order. The whole deal with two night minimum stay, one week advance cancellation, etc. is so bad. The rates are increased that weekend too. A good reason that it should be moved around the state.

I second what you said Will. The Days Inn was were we stayed for the Topeka Tornado tournament, Friday night. I got that room for $54/night. The same room on Thursday night before state is $89/night! I thought Sunday-Thursday was supposed to be cheaper???

Slambam,
Your comment "If a club does not keep the commitment for the number of rooms they should not be able to get them for the next year." This is how it works today and has for at least the last 5 years for our club. Saturday morning if all the rooms in the contract were paid for than you have the opportunity to sign next years contract for that same number and type of rooms.

No weekends are typically cheaper in any large city and especially when you have a lot of business being conducted during the week. Like the legislature being in session.

Hayes ups their rates during HS state tournament. I paid $74 a night last year, and managed to reserve a room much earlier this year for $54 a night. Quite a price jump!

Everybody raises the rates. That's why on the back of the door it says they can charge $45.00 to $150.00. We wrestled at state last year and came back a week later because my son plays traveling soccer and the rooms were even higher than state wrestling. We just have to deal with it. Either drive everyday or pay for a room.

My point was if your club reserves 25 rooms. Ends up using and paying for 18 and giving 7 back your contract for the next year should only be for 18. the people who ended up staying and paying for the 7 returned rooms should get first crack at those "leftover" rooms not the original club that could not fulfill it's original commitment. As is they offer the same club the same 25 rooms on contract for the next year.

See the problem?

Slambam,
I'll say it again if you give up any rooms from your clubs block contract you are not offered them again the next year. Stop by the sales office and ask for yourself. They also manage a waiting list for clubs to get any of these rooms for the following year.

Take it2 themat,

My club had 3 rooms last year that were given up by other clubs. When I tried as we checked out to get a contract for them I was told they were already sold on contract back to the club that originally had them and gave them up. I have worked with the manager Mindy Stock for a full year on this and have even talked to a VP in corp relations for the hotel. I have written letters, etc. So I have done my homework and you are mistaken at least in my case.
