Kansas Wrestling Forums General Discussion Kids Folkstyle what to do?

My 7 year old son placed 5th at the 6 & U state tourny in Ottawa last year. He has more talent than dear old dad ever thought of having. The problem is that dear old dad is more exited about wrestling season starting than he is. I don't even know if he will wrestle this year and that thought breaks my heart. I don't want to be THAT dad who makes my child go out for a sport but I feel the need to push him a little because I believe it has a little bit to do with him being a little lazy. If any of you have had similar situations with your wrestlers I would be interested in how you handled it and whant the results were.

I have 3 sons. I pushed the first 2 pretty hard and the oldest quit as a freshman in high school. I feel that high school is what we are shooting for. Who remembers a state champion 6u kid. All kids are different. Some can take more pushing than others. I have really lightened up on my 3rd. He is loving it.

You have got to let the kids set their own pace!! It doesn't hurt to give a little encouragement in the right direction. I pushed my oldest son too hard in the beginning and almost lost him. With the help of my wife making me back off, he started to enjoy it more and has found success along they way. Now, with my youngest…..I better end it here; it will take to long to explain.

Bottom line, their kids and they need to enjoy it in the beginning.

I suggest letting him decide and you continuing to support the kids club you are affiliated with. Go to practice help other kids, it won't be long til you find out where he is. Either he wants to go with you or he won't. My kids will want to tag along before too long. If it's his decision you aren't pushing, maybe a little manipulating is in order.
