The real eye brow raiser should be this...
204 Clubs were sanctioned in our four districts last year. Less than 100 clubs voted on the 6U State Proposal.
Does anyone care? We should! This is the only gathering of Kids Club directors each year. It is one Sunday out of 52! We need to be responsible. (And before anyone takes a Smokey Cabin cheap shot at me, I was at a wrestling tournment with two of my sons yesterday. How can anyone think it is okay to ridicule me for that?)
Attendance has dwindled since the removal of the need to attend to allow your club to have additional passes to the Kids State Tournament. This coupled with the fact it was on Halloween weekend.
Two proposals:
1) The meeting needs to be the 2nd weekend in October to avoid Halloween as well as several major preseason national wrestling tournaments.
2) Clubs who do NOT sign out after the meeting has adjourned will be allowed only two free passes to the floor for the Kids State Tournament. Additional passes will be $25 each. All clubs who sign out will be allowed as many as they need per the current coach pass rules.

So if someone gathers information, and changes their opinion on something, it makes them a bad person? Come on Smokey, give it a rest. I used to think that I needed to scream at my kid every time I thought he didn't give it 100% when he was 5 ot 6 yrs old. Now I don't, does that make me a flip flopper?
The meeting is a pain in the rear, but shouldn't be that big of a deal that each club can't find ONE stinking person that can attend and stay for its entirety. If not, maybe we need to do some sort of secure proxy type voting.
I guarantee you, that if Will's new proposal was put in place, there would be some MAD SOBs on some clubs when they found out their team rep didn't show up at the meeting. It would be a self policing thing after a year or two. Still wouldn't keep anyone from getting a coaches' pass like the old rule did, but it would hit them in the pocketbook if they didn't show up.........

Funny I flip flop on this one also.I think every coach should be allowed on the floor that has a card.I also think the only was to get people in the world to do any thing is by good and bad[If they are good we give alot/If they are bad we take alot away.].Most all of us use this on our kids. In this case there needs to be some way to teach people they need to come come to the meeting and stay.it is sad we have to teach this at all.

Edited by Cokeley (September, 12 2008 12:56 PM) _________________________ Will Cokeley (708)267-6615 willcokeley@gmail.com Sean, Have you ever read "Who Moved My Cheese?" Things change and you have to adapt. That isn't flip flopping. In fact, these are too complete different topics. The issue from the past was getting coaches to the floor so kids would have their coach. I had NO idea that people would quit attending the state meeting when we took away the card enforcement. A new problem was created by a very popular and successful idea/solution. What do you do? I guess you say "Oh well." I am trying to brainstorm and get some conversation started to resolve the attendance issue at the state body meeting. How about this. You can't sanction your club until you sign out from the state body meeting. If you cannot attend you pay $250 to sanction your club. Just another idea. I am not "flip flopping". Are there no remodeling projects in the OP/Olathe area right now???

Or take it a step further..... if you don't sanction you club at the District meeting, you pay the District 250...and if you don't get sanctioned before the state meeting, you pay another 250 to the State.

Thank you for asking Mr. Cokeley. I am plenty busy. Projects are in Shawnee, Kansas City, Mission and Lenexa, - right now. None in OP or Olathe at this time. Oh - and quit calling me at 9:30 - 10:00pm in the evening. I am not available a that time. Try 4-5 am in the morning.

Sean, Will,
This one is for you two....
Facts:
1. You are both friends of mine. 2. You both have a genuine passion for the sport of wrestling and more importantly the kids. 3. You both give way more than you get to our wrestling community. 4. You both do more for kids in one wrestling season than most people do in their life time.
Now having said that I have one request.....
Quit making these things personal! You both have ideas and different ways/methods to go about what is best for the kids and our sport. That is ok. Quit taking stuff personal with each other and find some middle ground. It is perfectly acceptable to agree to disagree on some things.
BIGGEST FACT:
You two picking on each other and bickering like little kids is damaging both your reputations and overshadowing all the great stuff you guys do for the kids and the sport of wrestling.
Take this for what it is worth.
Shawn

Shawn that could not have been said better. I don't agree with everything that is said but, my kids read this forum also. We all need to set a good example because it is for the kids first and formost.

We all need to set a good example because it is for the kids first and formost. What was on here that was inappropriate for kids to read? I made a constructive improvement suggestion and I get called out by Smokey Cabin, I believe that makes him the instigator. I explain my suggestion and I make a joke about him not spending enough time working and that is classified as bickering? Please...get some thicker skin Shawn. Did the 6U chains get carried away, sure. You have known me long enough to know I am not going to lay down when I get ridiculed for being at a wrestling tournament with two my sons. The purpose of this post was to make everyone who reads aware that we have an attendance issue at our state body meeting. It wasn't about a coach pass problem or whether Sharon and Shawn think Smokey and I are having too much fun on the forum. I challenge Sean, Shawn, Sharon, and Jarrod to come up with some ideas on how to fix the APATHY problem and not worry about Smokey and me. We will schedule a match in the Octagon, winner gets a month's free breakfast buffets! Back to the topic. HOW DO WE GET 100% OF OUR CLUBS TO ATTEND THE STATE BODY MEETING???

Will,
I like your idea that you recommended in the first post.....
"2) Clubs who do NOT sign out after the meeting has adjourned will be allowed only two free passes to the floor for the Kids State Tournament. Additional passes will be $25 each. All clubs who sign out will be allowed as many as they need per the current coach pass rules." Posted by Will on the first post
I have thought about this and initially I had some other ideas but the more I thought about your proposal compared to some of my ideas I think this is the right mixture of rewarding clubs that stay. It also allows clubs that don't attend or leave early to understand their decision and gives them an option so they aren't limited on coaches passes....they just have to pay for all but 2 of them.
I like that idea!
Not sure about the date. I know we are in the middle of football games during the time period you recommend. I also know that Halloween is definitelly not the time to have it. Not sure what the best answer on that one.
As far as getting 100% membership to attend......not going to happen. I think it is a good goal but I don't think it is realistic, however, shooting for a 90% attendance and voting rate seems like a realistic goal to me.
Just my thoughts.
Shawn

Do we still feel it is important to have our State Body meeting on the same weekend as the KWCA clinic?
Are you making a POSITIVE difference in the life of kids?

I don't know if it's important, but I'm sure one of the reasons the KWCA has their meeting that weekend is football is over for most of the schools. I'm also sure combining the two events gives us a better rate on the room.

While attending the State Body meeting on Sunday Mike Juby encouraged all to attend the KWCA meeting that is held on the prior Fri/Saturday. They had their banquet at noon on Saturday and everything was over by 2:30pm or so. Would it be possible to move the meeting from Sunday to Saturday starting at 4 or 5pm? I know that several coaches stayed the night on Saturday night to be able to attend the meeting on Sunday. Just a thought.

How many people attend both? I think we can get a great room rate either way. I defintely advocate moving it up at least one week if not two. If more reports could be distributed via email prior to the district meeting it could save a TON of time as well.
