You are bringing back some bad memories for me Chiefs. I wrestled a varsity tournament down there as a freshman back in '81 and got stuck twice, I think in two matches. To the best of my memory, which is shabby at best these days, I told myself that I would never get stuck again. Although I came close a couple of times, I did not get pinned the rest of my high school career.

Back then though, I only wrestled 73 matches my from my sophomore through my senior year. Today, most of these guys get more than twice that in two years. Heck, my son wrestled 78 matches last year when combining his Jr High season and the Kids' season and he only got stuck twice. Another accomplishment for him that has eclipsed his dad.

I kept pretty good stats back then, and ironically I found the note book I kept and the two guys who pinned me were from Hugoton and Leoti Kansas. I didn't have their names written down, so maybe someone can help me out. We were wrestling 119 that year.

I made another statistical error, Garrett actually got pinned three times last year. Thanks to PJ Cheney, Hunter Price, and a State Champion from Team North Dakota at the Middle Schools Nationals Duals, he did lose by fall three times.

Bobby Deleon I believe was the 119 pounder in '81'. He was a 3 timer for Leoti.

Mr. Geyer:

As I recall you were a fair wrestler yourself - I go back to when
Ron Furman was coaching Jr High at Ulysses - He was more famous
when he had the Seger triplets at the High School Level.

Also Bobby's bro, Alex was no slouch - I think the Leoti Kids
success was in part due to the awesome Mexican food served
up at Charlie's.

I wish I knew if that was him. The name sounds familiar, so it most likely was. I know the tournament was early in the season because I only got seven Varsity matches in before I was bumped by a Sophomore who dropped to 119. It was either December of '80, or January of '81.

Yes, Sir. Charlies restaurant is still going, and still awsome. It's ran by his Son now, and accounts for most the 50 extra pounds I now carry. lol
