'Untested kids' come up big for Vikes

After battling through an extremely tough Clay Center tournament last Saturday, Wednesday's triangular at Topeka West provided a more relaxed atmosphere for Seaman's wrestling team.

It also was a golden opportunity for the Vikings to show off a bit, with Seaman shutting out Topeka West 81-0 before taking a 55-13 win against Washburn Rural.

"This allows some of the kids that maybe aren't as successful in a tournament like Clay Center to shine a little bit," Seaman coach Patrick Kelly said. "That's important. That's important for the confidence and to get that experience that they need."

Against West, which was open at five weight classes, the Vikings got pins from freshman Aaron Akers (103 pounds), junior Zach Pittman (119), senior Bret Simmons (125), freshman Sam Mizell (130), sophomore Brandon Fuller (135), senior Cole Schreiner (140), senior Jason McGinty (215) and sophomore Dylan Hall (285).

Seaman sophomore 189-pounder Nathan Stanley took an 8-5 decision against West junior Patrick McKinney in the best match of the dual.

In the victory against Rural, Simmons, Fuller, Schreiner, McGinty and Hall posted their second pins of the night while the Vikings also got pins from junior Dylan Kadous (145), sophomore Bryant Guillen (152) and senior Austin Ogden (171) while junior Jonathan Boucher (112), Pittman and Fuller won by decision and Stanley took a major decision.

"I was real happy with what I saw from Sam Mizell at 130 and Brandon Fuller at 135," Kelly said. "They're probably our most untested kids right now and I thought they did a nice job."

Rural got wins in the Seaman match from junior Aaron Freislinger (103), sophomore Weston Mikoleit (130) and senior Nathan Shipley (160). Freislinger won by pin over Akers while Mikoleit took a 10-1 major decision over Mizell and Shipley took a 7-5 win over junior Aaron Cool.

The Junior Blues rolled to a 78-3 win over West in the final match of the night, with West's lone win coming from sophomore 125-pounder Jacob Thrall.

Rural got pins from Freislinger, Mikoleit, senior Richie Mosqueda (119), sophomore Aaron Wilson (135), junior Beau Creech (140), junior Aaron Freeze (189), freshman Aaron Davis (215) and junior Cole Scott (285).

Overall, Rural coach Bobby Bovaird was pleased with the Junior Blues' night of work.

"We had four or five matches (against Seaman) where we ended up losing, but if a couple of things had gone differently — maybe a little bit more pressure, a few more seconds — they were matches we could have won and the score would have been a lot different," Bovaird said. "I was pretty proud of some of those guys.

"We got out-classed by some of (Seaman's) studs, which is going to happen, but we didn't back down from anything and I'm proud of the way they fought."
