This is for all the tournament directors in Kansas - how many tournaments in Kansas will feature a girls division? Most girls in Kansas accept that we'll have to wrestle boys most of the time but we do appreciate tournaments that offer a girls division from time to time. Since one doesn't exist, I'd like to develop a list of Kansas tournaments offering Girls Divisions. It will make selecting tournaments easier for girl wrestlers.

Generally, the number of female wrestlers at any tournament is very small and does not dictate the need or justify the expense for a separate division.

I understand that due to the current level of participation that tournaments for girl wrestlers will be hard for most tournament directors to justify. Such is the current status of women's wrestling. In order to encourage better participation at the few tournaments for girls I was simply asking for tournament directors to identify themselves so that I could put together a list of all (or any) such girls wrestling tournaments. USA Wrestling Kansas has a long list of tournaments but it is not always clear when a girls division is scheduled. I would hate for a girl wrestler to miss out on an opportunity to test herself at a tournament in her home state.

It's not a bad idea to find out about these events early in the season. Last year we went to a girls State Tournament in Troy, KS. Then found out every girl in KS had gone to a huge girls tournament in Lawrence. We missed the best girls event of the year due to lack of investigating.

Not very many went to Troy, KS. most went to girls state in Derby which was a USAWKS event. The one in Troy was not. Hopefully derby will have one again this year.

I think everyone sees my point - for girls wrestling to grow we need better participation at all girls tournaments in Kansas. We want the best turnout possible so that tournament directors can see the growth of women's wrestling and be more willing to host tournaments in the future. Last year we ended up with 2 tournaments on the same day that were just an hour drive from each other. The result was that 2 tournament directors felt that low turnout at their tournament was a sign that future girls tournaments weren't worth the effort or investment.

Maybe we don't have many girls tournaments scheduled this year. Nonetheless, lets help promote and support any that we have. If you are hosting such an event, please let us know so we can help spread the news to girl wrestlers.

I think you should look at the numbers again. Lawrence had the largest girls tournament in the state of Kansas in 2004, Derby was the next closest. Both tournaments had a good turnout. Ark City, Derby, Rose Hill, Atchison and Lawrence have annual tournaments for girls.
The Girls Midwest Regional Wrestling Championships was and will continue to be USA Sanctioned and had our date set before the other tournament. But yes due to lack of communication, girls did not know they had a choice. There are enough girls in Kansas to justify girls bracketing, if their parents will make the commitment to take them to those tournaments. And wrestling clubs and coaches will make the commitment to tell the girl wrestlers where they can go. (the tournament directors will provide coaches to a girl wrestler who does not have a coach).
Lack of communication is the problem, but we are all working on that.

Annual tournaments with girls bracketing:
Ark City -- December
Derby -- January
Atchison -- January
Rose Hill -- January

Annual girls tournaments:
Girls Midwest Regional Wrestling Championships - late Feb- early March

USGWA also has a Kansas State Championships over High School State weekend.

Though for 2005-2006 Desoto and Topeka Terminators have expressed interest in girls bracketing.

If your in high school you can't wrestle any matches except for high school. This is some kind of high school rule.

what kind of competition will there be in the 8u 52lbs or 55lbs.

If you're ON the high school TEAM, you can't wrestle anything else. This is a great example of an instance where, unless and until high schools have girls teams, an athlete would choose a club sport over a high school sport.

It's also a very feasible way for high schools, or the KSHSAA, to measure girls' participation in wrestling so they could be aware of the numbers to decide if and when to add girls teams.
