I am curious on what people feel may have been the best or most exciting match of the state tournament?

Was not in the championship but the quarterfinal match between Hayden Friend of Plainville and LeFluer(sp?) in 12u 88. Think it ended 11-7 (LeFleur won, again can't remember spelling or where he is from)but was much closer and I really never saw two kids put it all out there the entire weekend like these two did. And no, I am not a relative or coach of either, just happened to watch it. One of those matches you hate to see anyone lose.

I saw a lot of great matches, but with all of the mats filled with action at the same time, I found myself wandering from mat to mat. There was one match that was energy packed, a lot of action, two very skilled and determined wrestlers, and it went to OT. I was watching the OT, two wrestlers going at it like their lives depended on it, then I looked away for maybe twenty seconds to watch a wrestler I knew, looked back and the next match was starting. I still don't know who won. Either way, those two both deserved it.

that 12u 88 bracket was solid top to bottom. same with 12u 80. alot of 2point matches, and ot matches in both those divisions.

Funny that you say that. The match I was watching was U12 finals, although I am not sure of the weight. I have to say, wrestling on a half mat didn't work well for these two. I would have to guess, with the OT, the match took close to fifteen, if not more, minutes.

I started to guess at the weight, but I went ahead and looked at looked at TW and I am sure it was the U12 110 match between Luellen and Hydock. That matches the time frame as I was waiting on the U12 130 match with one of our wrestlers that was in the finals on that mat.

Lee,
I was watching the same match and felt the mat was way too small for them. I too looked away (got distracted) and missed the final result. It was a great match, both wrestlers should be proud after that battle.

What are some thoughts about best matches in each age group?

I am tooting our teams horn here, but i thought the championship match at HS 250 was a great match between Cash Drylie from Hays and Josh Martinez from Marysville. These two kids went toe-to-toe non stop and beat on each other the whole match. This match got a little Chippy with a punch and some headbuts but the two kept at it. It is good to see some heavier weights with that much movement. Drylie came out on top in the end.

12u 80lbs. Semis match Frame and Morabito was an excellent match. Went to OT with Frame winning. Was one of the toughest matches my son had all year. Thank you to the Frame dad and coach for all the kind words you gave my son. Congrats Kameron on state champ a win well deserved! I watched boys that wrestled all year and they all put on spectacular performance at state.

i have never been in so many overtime matches in my life. we had several kids from our club wrestle overtime matches at state. won some and lost some. thats what its all about is the best competition. my son said after his 3rd place match is next year i am going to pin all my kids in the first period cause i cant move my arms now. that excites me cause he said earlier he wasnt going to wrestle next year so i just smiled at him.

Hopefully he knows that "not wrestling" is not an option that his dad will give him!!! Fisher has a good story about when Brent and Blake were young, he asked them if they wanted to keep wrestling, and they said they wanted to play bball, and he said, that isn't one of the options. I think they rattled off a few others, go to the movies, go to Hooters,I can't remember exactly, and he kept telling them that those weren't options either, I think he finally outlasted them and they figured out that wrestling was the only option they had.......

actually tim and i had a good long talk this weekend and he actually told me that same story. i already told my son he can play basketball but it will be in the summer so im sure he will be excited to wrestle when the season comes around. he will be on the older side of the age group as so will over half our team and they all know that next year will be an awesome year for the Kansas Young Guns. Cant wait. wish it started next week but i am ready for a break for a while.

I know there were many many great matches, but I have to throw out 12 and under 76. Awesome matches, 4 OT, 3 1pt, 5 2pt (one was an injury default, but was a 2pt match with just a few seconds left if I remember correctly). My hats off to all of the wrestlers in 76, and the studs that didn't make it out of districts too, as there was 3-4 dang good ones that didn't get to compete at state.
