New to wrestling. Can anyone explain how a outstanding wrestler is picked?

Usually it's the champion with the most falls in the least amount of time, at least in kids. In high school, I believe the coaches vote on it.

Depends on the tournament, sometimes, the winner of the weight who has the most falls in the least amount of time, sometimes the coaches and refs have to vote on it. I personally like it when the coaches and refs vote on it for various reasons. This is especially true at the kids level.

The problem I see with the coaches and Ref voting on it is that there is a lot of wrestling happening out there and for one to remember a name or even a team could be difficult.

No sure an outstanding wrestler should be named at tournaments in kids. Any kid who wrestlers is a champion in my book. As a child the Gold was all I needed to hold my head highand think I was the greatest wrestler of all time *L*

We always give OW trophies at our tourney, and used to use the most pins in least time format. However, we felt that slanted the award to the wrestler in an easy bracket, and took it away from a kid with a lot of tough competition.

As a matter of fact, often there would be a bracket with 4 or 5 ranked kids in it, and one of them would be outstanding subjectively, but would be out of the running because they couldn't pin the other studs.

This year we went to a point system. OW must be in an open or "A" bracket, and we give 6 points for a pinfall, 4 for a tech fall, 3 for a 10+ win and 2 for a 9- win. I think this system gives more kids a shot at the trophy.

Kinda leaves the Hwyweights out that only have 3 guys in their bracket and not 8

Scooby, that is why I personally like the coaches and refs deciding. Small kids and big kids with lower numbers have the same opportunity.

I agree scooby, my son is a hvywt and has been told at a tourney that he would never qualify for a ow or a quick pin because not enough competition, even though he had the quickest pin and pinned all the others in his bracket. my son says it is the scrawny kid trophy's.
