Guillen’s return sparks third-place team finish at Emporia’s Winter Wrestling Classic
He’s back! Two-time state medalist Bryant Guillen returned to the mat on Saturday for the first time this season after a long absence due to an injury. The junior opened with a fall, struggled to an overtime victory in round two, then looked closer to his old form with a fall in both the semifinals and finals of the 160-pound weight class at Emporia’s Winter Wrestling Classic. Joining Guillen in the winners circle were seniors Dylan Kadous (152) and Aaron Cool (170). Kadous went 5-0 with falls in his opening and closing matches and three hard-fought decisions in between. He is now 12-3 with 7 falls on the year. Cool went 4-0 on the day with two falls. He dominated his opponent in the finals to make it three Viking titles in a row. Cool stands at 10-4 with 4 falls heading into break.
The effort of the three titlists was backed up by strong performances from several others to give Seaman a third-place finish in the eighteen-team field that included seven ranked teams.
Senior Zach Pittman (120) went a sparkling 4-1 on the day, but was only able to finish in fourth place. Rules state that wrestlers can have a maximum of five matches per day and Zach reached that point after the consolation semifinals. He was sluggish in his opening matches, but got back on track in time to tally three falls in a row to end the day. This performance moves his season summary to 11-3 with eight falls. Senior Geoff Garrison went 4-1 and finished third at 138-pounds with three falls. His season record stands at 11-3 with 7 falls. Junior Nathan Stanley (195) finished 3-1 in third-place. He is now 10-3 with 5 falls on the year. Junior Dylan Hall (285) competed in a deep heavyweight field and came away with a solid fourth-place showing and a 3-2 record on the day with 3 falls. He is now 10-3 on the year with a team-leading 10 falls.
Seniors Johathan Boucher (126), Connor Smith (132), and Branden Watson (182) along with junior Brandon Fuller (145) also contributed to the team total, but were unable to break into the placing round.
The junior varsity squad participated in the Blue Valley Northwest Classic on Friday. Team scores were not kept, but six Vikings went undefeated on the day. Jaelynn Gay, Caleb Reed, Valeria Rivera, Garin Davin, Nick Brier, and Matt Ridgeway were all 2-0.
After the holiday break, the junior varsity returns to action on January 5th with an event at Bonner Springs. The varsity competes in a new event on their schedule, the Louisburg invitational on January 7th.
