In our area many of the other youth sports are affiliated with United Way. In the past UW has reimbursed these organizations for signup fees for kids who were on free or reduced lunch at the schools. Recently UW has only been covering a portion of those fees which has caused the organizations to have to make up the difference.
With wrestling basically being a traveling sport our club has never been associated with UW as the parents would still be required to get their child to and from the tournaments. In addition, we have seen too many instances where the parents of UW kids simply used the sport for a babysitter. That said, if we know of a kid who wants to wrestle and does not have the means we will make sure they have an opportunity. I like many others, have hauled kids to tournaments and paid their entries. But, these were kids that I knew in advance had the desire just not the means to wrestle.
