Men's Wrestling - Mon, May 21, 2012
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell senior 165-pound wrestler Joe Hambleton has been named to the 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hambleton, a two-time national qualifier from Parsons, Kan., was among 21 student-athletes honored on the NCAA Division III Men's At-Large Team in District 8. The group included three other Iowa Conference wrestlers in Buena Vista's Brian Broll and Coe's Victor Khristenko and Nick LeClere.
As a first team all-district recipient, Hambleton advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot. The Division III Academic All-America honorees will be announced June 5.
Hambleton was a second team academic all-district selection in 2010-11.
The all-academic teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for consideration, a player must be a starter or important reserve, have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution and carry a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3.
Hambleton, a physics major, owns a 3.80 GPA. He is a three-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American. Hambleton is also a three-time IIAC All-Academic recipient.
Hambleton finished a strong career on the mat with a 116-50 record, ranking seventh on Cornell's all-time wins list. He led this year's Rams with a 34-8 record and earned his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Hambleton is a three-time IIAC placewinner, taking third at 165 in 2012 and 2011.
