I am contemplating going to the Southern Plains Coaching Camp at Hays during the Southern Plains Kids/Cadets Freestyle & Greco Wrestling Camp. Thought this would be a good place to get feedback on if there are those that have gone to this before and what you thought of it. Also a good place to get some discussion about what all is going on there. Who are some of those going and what are your thoughts on this camp for coaches?

I believe I am going to go. I sent an e-mail to Bob Phillips and am waiting to hear back.

I think this will be the first time for the coaches clinic.

Hey Randy, if we get to practice can we be practice partners, I can imagine trying to hit a 5 point throw on each other?

I just want to get certification bronze, silver, gold, whatever. I don't have any of those and don't know how you go about getting it.

The first thing you do is sign up on a clinic and let someone throw a 5 point throw on you. If you get up you get a copper card, if you get up and take it to them you get a bronze, if you take it to them and get within 2 points you get a silver, and if you get up hit them with a 5 point throw and then get an extra 1 for appreciation you get a gold. Of course if you don't get up you don't get anything. A lot depends on who is doing the throw, me or Randy, you probably get up, and get something, Coach Ed or Coach Gonzo, you probably don't get up.

I think this camp is what the state has needed for a long time. I always hear this from coaches. I would teach Freestyle and Greco but I don't know anything about it except what I see on TV (which is not very much). This is a great opportunity for coaches across the state to be able to find out more about Freestyle and Greco. This will be a technique camp. This does not mean you will sit around a mat and watch other wrestlers do moves. This means you will need to bring work out gear and try the moves. How intense you get is up to you. As of now I have Andrew Ubben from FHSU will be over seeing the coaches clinic. We will rotate the other coaches with Andrew but he will be the person in charge. Also this would be a great time for fathers and sons to spend some quality time together. There are not very many camps where dad and son can participate in the same camp. If you have any questions please e-mail me or call 785-364-3489. We are limited to the # of coaches and wrestlers we can have.

Bob your son is a pretty darn good freestyle/greco coach in his own right, must have learned from the right guy

Ryan is not to bad at Freestyle/Greco. He may never be a national champion in Freestyle/Greco. He works hard at it. But he would not be where he is today if he did not wrestle Freestyle/Greco when he was younger. You have to always want to get better.

Good one Mike.

When people ask me the difference between FS/GR and Folkstyle, I give them this analogy:

If Folkstyle, if I drop you on your head and make you stupid, then it's shame on me for not being careful.

In FS/GR, if I drop you on your head and make you stupid, then it's shame on you for letting me!

Gibby that's a pretty fair analogy!

How many coaches are going to commit to this worthy camp?

Come on guys, this camp is 5 weeks away! Sign up NOW.

Seriously, we need to support this great opportunity for coaches education. I'm sure the camp and fellowship will be great!
