This is a reminder that the the Derby Novice Tournament on Sunday February 17, 2013 is for FIRST YEAR wrestlers only. If your wrestler has ever been carded before the 2012-2013 season they are not eligible to enter this tournament under any circumstance! For the integrity of the tournament, it is crucial that parents and coaches do the right thing.

Thanks

I have seen lots of discussions about Novice on this board and was also looking at some past results and wanted to ask what (if any) is the process to validate that the kids in this tournament are truly 1st year only? I agree it should be the coaches/directors but I don't think that always works.

In a small sampling I saw kids wrestling in this tournament last year that show previous season entries and results in track.

Another example of the Novice debate I found was a kid that won this tournament last year is still wrestling Novice this year, I feel if you win this tournament it's time to move on to open class.

I don't expect the tournament director to research all this but maybe if the entries are posted early like the Salina guys did last week coaches, directors and those "over protective" parents could do the investigative work.

Novice is a tricky topic, but I think for tournaments like this it can be enforced and monitored that everyone is a 1st year wrestler. After that the coaches/directors/parents of those kids that are truly trying or capable to succeed in the sport will move on, the others will choose to stay in the minors and wrestle for years and for some kids that is OK as not all of them are capable of winning a match in legit open tournament but still enjoy the sport.

If you have had a USA card before this season then you are not a first year wrestler. Hypothetically speaking.... you received a USA card last season but never went to a tournament, you are a second year wrestler (even though you never wrestled a single match). Unless it has changed in the past year.

I just think there needs to be some clear cut rules, I understand it has been discussed and hard to draw that fine line but at the same time it shouldn't be that difficult.

Novice is any 1st or 2nd year wrestler who has not placed top 2 in any open tournament with 6 or more wrestlers in the bracket. Placing top 2 at Novice State makes you an open wrestler. If you violate the rule it's a 1 year suspension. Your exception could be a kid that has never placed top 3 in a Novice tournament with 5 or more wrestlers in the bracket can go beyond 2 years.

If you read Coach Lindsey's original post you will see that there is a clear cut rule. FIRST YEAR wrestleres only so if your kid was carded before this year they are not eligible for the Derby Novice

Jeremy,

I understand what they intend for this tournament fully! I did not intend to single this tournament out or even imply that it is a problem only with this tournament and I don't expect them to monitor every kid that enters. I think this is a wrestling wide problem and just brought it up here, sort of like the last sentence about coaches and parents doing the right thing. Apologizes if anyone running this tournament took it personal.

MG,

I understand what you are talking about I was just saying for this tourny there is a clear cut rule and coaches and parents need to do the right thing. I know in the past we have had people point kids out that were entered that were not first year kids and it was taken care of accordingly.

My son's kids club isn't going as a team but I am wanting to take a handful of kids to this tourney because i think it will be a blast to get the state atmosphere and feeling of the state tourney in our first year kids, how do i go about signing these kids up? I haven't tried doing it myself on track yet but one of the parents said they couldn't do it from there. I figured this was the best place to start for info. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks

Anyone in the ICT willing to weigh in some kids from out of town? There are some families that would like to come down Saturday therefore missing the home site weigh in at there respective club. Since there is not a tournament site weigh in option it kind of binds some people up that are traveling from a distance. If not anyone know just how early in the day a person can conduct a legit weigh in?
