Kansas Wrestling Forums General Discussion High School Interesting question 5a 120 state finals

Just have to ask in the 5a 120 finals match at one point both wrestlers were in a situation in the 2nd period where they were in a jumble of bodies with really no control by either. Now both had their backs exsposed to the mat in nearfall criteria. The ref never awarded an escape or reversal yet he did not award any back points either. My question is if the top wrestler never lost control how did he not get awarded back points. They were in that position for agood 15 seconds. Just wandering if there is a ruling or just a mistake. Thank you

I saw that as well. When the bottom wrestler attempted a wizzer-tilt/churella roll. It looked as though he was going to get a reversal and back points, but the ref never awarded that and when they left that position I wondered the same thing as you Mike. Thinking back on it I can't remember if the bottom wrestler ever broke nearfall criteria long enough for the top wrestler to score points. I feel like when the bottom wrestler was trying to hold the top wrestler in the tilt, he was also staying off his back enough to not give up nearfall as well. However, I did not have the best angle either.
