Coaches:

This is the third year for our tourney and each year we get bigger and better. We’ve tried different ways to maximize opportunities for teams and I think we’ve come up with an awesome way for you and your teams to get a lot of wrestling in a very short time and all before the Christmas break and for very little money.

We will be looking to host 32 teams over two days using 8 mats. We will have 4 mats at Crestview High School and 4 mats at Davidson Middle School (right behind Crestview High). Both schools will have plenty of seating and fully active concession stands and hospitality rooms for coaches and officials.

The tourney will start with 4 groups of eight teams wrestling round robins. Each team will get 7 matches in your round robin. At the completion of all of the round robins, we will then take the number 1 team from each group and seed a mini dual tourney (seeding will be based on won/loss record in the round robin or most combined match points in your round robin). Each team will wrestle in a semi-final with winners wrestling for 1st place and losers wrestling for 3rd. We’ll do the same for the number 2 teams (these teams will wrestle for places 5 through 8), the number 3 teams (these teams will wrestle for places 9 through 12), and so on. This format will guarantee each team 9 matches over the two-day period. With 144 expected duals during the course of the tourney we should be out of the gym and heading home before 8:00 pm on Saturday.

If we can work out the details, these are the things that will separate this tourney from others:

-The hospitality room is TOP NOTCH. Coaches, this alone will make you want to come back!
-We hope to have live video feed of featured team and individual match-ups going from one school to the other.
-We hope to have announcements of results and upcoming match-ups made to both schools.
-Experienced (and hopefully adult) scorekeepers at each mat.
-We hope to have discounts lined up at area hotels/motels and restaurants.
(Crestview has several buffet, fast food, and nice sit down restaurants ranging
from Chinese, Seafood, Italian, Steak, or to simple American cuisine)
-We hope to have a website up and running soon (our teams website is
http://www.eteamz.com/crestviewwrestling and we will link to it when it is up and
running)

We will have custom medals for wrestlers (gold for undefeated, silver for one loss, and bronze for two losses) and custom trophies for the top 4 teams. We will also have awards for Most Pins Least Amount of Time, Fastest Fall, Most Valuable Wrestler Lower Weights, and Most Valuable Wrestler Upper Weights.

Last year our tourney saw six of the 15 teams competing carry a state ranking in to our gym. We also had a field rich with talent as several top rated wrestlers competed. We are a growing program and we are trying to create an event that attracts teams from all over the country. We’re asking you to share in this development. As of the mailing of this letter, we have interest from all over the state of Florida. Teams from Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, and Minnesota have also expressed much interest.

Here’s the deal, I need to know ASAP if you are interested. If you are, please send back the contract signed and this will guarantee your team a spot. Money will need to be by November 1, 2004, unless you’d like to send it now. All checks are to be made out to Crestview Wrestling. You can use the self addressed and stamped envelope that is included in the packet. Again, Coaches, I need to know very soon so I can begin making all the arrangements and lining up all the EXTRAS listed above.

If you need more information, please e-mail me: cjnxfowler@seii.net

Thanks for your consideration and see you in the gym!

Since Florida exceeds the 500 mile limitation from Kansas border, no Kansas High School is eligible for the tournament!

that rule kills Kansas on some levels...if a team has the money to travel or can raise it they should be allowed to go compete further away as long as classes that are/might be missed are taken care of academically.

Once again you are way off base. Kansas teams can find all the quality competition within the 500 hundred mile boundary. Shoot, we can travel to Colorado (Ponderosa), Oklahoma (Ponca City /El Reno), Nebraska (Omaha Skutt), and Missouri (Park Hill). I am certain these adjoining states can provide more than adequate competition for those wishing to travel out of state.

Why travel to Florida??

its nice and the babes in bikinis are awesome. but i do see your point. i wouldn't want to travel that far just to wrestle when we can just go to those states around us

Why cut urself off if there is a chance to wrestle around the country? Sometimes the best competition is in the far reaches of the U.S. And in addition, the best wresting is in California, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, which Kansas isnt eligible for. The 500 mile thing is retarded, Kansas teams need and should go as far as they can to tangle w/ top competition.

Why? These are just high school students. Is not the purpose of high school to provide an education? While you were participating in the Kansas City metropolitan area, how many of the teams on the West side of the State line could compete with the schools on the East side? You only had to drive across the metropolitan area for a butt kicking. No need to travel hundreds of miles.

The best wrestling is likely in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The majority of the schools who travel in Ohio are private schools (St. Edwards, St. Paris Graham, etc.).

Why? For the awesome experience and stories one can have wrestling kids from other states. Many states have different philosophies when it comes on how to wrestle and its nice to get that variety. Also, BVNW somehow finds a way w/out the sacrifice of an education to go to New Mexico every year. Its all about switching up your competition.

I read that some Kansas teams will be competing at the Lone Star Duals in Texas next year for the High School portion, how far is that from the border of Kansas, surely someone will be breaking the rules if they go and compete there, unless they find a loop hole of a way to travel there.

You can travel more than 500 miles if the state approves it. Not sure how you go about doing it though.

If some schools can gain permission by requesting so from the state, why don't you try? I took my team in Florida to Maryland this past season. We faced competition that was just slightly better than what we see down here. But, we faced totally DIFFERENT competition! Also, that was an experience the kids will NEVER forget. Some of my guys had never flown, they have now. Some had never seen snow, they have now (it snowed the first night we were there). Experiences aren't just about what they get on the mat, it's the total package. If we can get the teams (I know we will) this will grow to be one of the premiere tournies in the country. try and be a part of it!

It is true that a team can travel farther if the state gives you permission.

As for reasons to travel... I agree that you can find plenty of great competition around here. I want to take Goddard to a Texas tournament for various reasons. Although we usually get all of the varsity types to go out for wrestling, it's a good recruiting tool for us. Kids may go out in middle school or as freshman because they know we do some fun trips. I'll bet there are plenty of tough kids in the state that would go out if they took a fun trip with their wrestling family. Staying overnight with your team in a hotel brings you closer as a team.

We also look for these tournaments for the same reason I encourage kids to wrestle in Vegas or Fargo or summer camps. Sure they may get their butts kicked, but they will come back with a new attitude. They see new styles and implement them. They get better!

Finally, it breaks up the monotony of the season. If you can coach a team through January and mid-February without the fight to keep them motivated you are a better coach than me. We have a high before the first meet, before our trip to Blue Valley NW and regionals. If we add to the "highs" of the season, we'll be more focused when it counts.

I'm sure there are other reasons to travel or not to travel, but these are some of ours. If we could afford the trip to Florida, we'd be there, too.

keep in mind, it's not 500 miles from your school, but 500 miles from the nearest border. Looking for quality competition - look no further than OK/NEB/MO. Pound for pound, some of the top competition is right here in our back yard.

I have yet to hear a college coach say, "I'm going to the great state of Florida to watch a 32 team tournament."

I have heard coaches talk about recruiting based on a tournament held in Fargo. Some of you ought to stop worrying about December through February and concentrate on a tournament held in July.

Kansas has 4 state champs per weight. There's only 8 all america spots for the entire nation. Where would you rather go for "great stories?"
