What are some big upsets that have occurred in the finals of the state tourney?

I remember Stevens (Matt from JC) beating Denning was a big won. They were both seniors. I believe Denning hadn't lost a match for a couple of years and was going for his third title. Stevens beat him in OT.

I guess Hemmerling over Carrol was big last year. Was Carrol going for his third title also?

Any others?

Two that stand out to me are Lance Shepard of Hoxie defeating 3 timer West Harding from Southeast of Saline. Happened in OT. Also Barry Samuelson from Oakley beat Jeff Carlson of Kinsley at 135 pounds. Carlson had pinned and majored Samuelson the two previous times they had met.

how about gilliand Hoxie beating J.B Harding from norton when gilliand was a freshmen and Harding was going for his 3rd straight championship and had already beaten gilliand 4 times earlier in the year

Ya the match with Wes Harding was way back in like 85 or 86 and back then you didnt go into double overtime, it was just the referees desicion on who he thought deserved the win, and Wes did not get picked for the win, my coach wrestled in highschool with him at Southeast.

I agree with Manning. That was huge upset when Barry beat Jeff in the finals. Carlson beat Charlie Huehl sp) in the semis and seemed to have a let down in the finals. Also, Barry wrestled smart and stayed away fron Jeff's great fireman's carry. Excellent Match!!!

In 89 Dant Allison beat Gonz Medina in the finals. I would have to say this was a large upset also.

Some comments on Jeffs match since I was his coach. Carlson Threw the firemans one time in that match and if I remember it right it went out of bounds. I would not say that Samuelson stayed away from that shot. Jeff was a great wrestler and it was a honor to coach him. He was on a mission that year. The training that he put himself through rivaled wrestlers at the college level. Coaching wise there were alot of things learned during that match that I have implemented in my coaching. Jeff if you read this I hope you know that you are one of the finest wrestlers I have ever coached and you have given me tons of things to tell future wrestlers about. I wish everybody had the work ethic that that kid had. He was one of the best.

I remember a few years ago a freshmen named Ryan Berkstresser from Campus won it. I think he had lost over 10 times that year and I dont remember ever seeing him wrestle again.

The biggest upset I have ever seen was in a regional final in 66 or 67. Lowery from Norton beat Lampe from Colby who was an amazing three timer who wrestled very well for Iowa State. I don't know how many times Lampe had beaten Lowery in a row but it was quite a few. Lowery knocked him off 10-2 and set up a great state finals match the next week in which Lampe came back and beat him by about the same score if I remember right. Lowery winning was not as big an upset as Lampe losing if you get my drift they were both great.

Jeremy Long, Santa Fe Trail, prevented Beau Tillman from Pratt from getting his final state championship. Tillman was easily in control of the match, and was caught in a head lock for which Long was well known. This launched Long's streak of four state championships.

That State tournament was filled with a lot of in 98 excitement at 189 Dennis from Oakley and Washburn from Hoxie met in the quaterfinals to get beat in the semis by Oviatt. 135 was stacked as well as Huel from Lincoln and Carlson met in the semis. I was good friends with both and they were friends after that. Another misshap was Zerr from Oakley undafeated going into the state tournament but suffered a broken hand the week of the State tournament and didnt even place in the tournament
