We just had our club sign-ups for this year and we have come across a special circumstance and wondered if anyone out there could help. We have a new little boy that really wants to wrestle and he has a "strawberry" birthmark on the top right side of his head. This is the kind of birthmark (hematoma?) that will bleed profusley if broken open. Has anyone ever dealt with this before and do you know of a headgear that is made for something like this? We thought about cutting the gel part out of a kneepad and attaching it to the top of a headgear. Does anyone think this will work? Are there any doctors out there that know of something we could do so that this little boy can wrestle? We would appreciate any help at all. Thanks so much!!!

Depending on where the mark is, they make a butt guard, sold at most wrestling stores like Sunflower and others. You might also want to consider or look at one of the face masks used for wrestlers with a broken nose or other facial injury. Outside of these I don't know what other options are available.

A Hair slicker might prevent some friction over this area, along with headgear that provides maximum coverage. If you can't find a headgear that seems appropriate I would contact the companies directly and explain the situation. They might have products for him that they don't list in the regular catalogs.
I think anything in the medical realm that you would find as far as protective wear would be a solid hard plastic type material that would not be appropriate for wrestling.
It is vital that he certainly protects this area.

We have thought about the butt pad and the birthmark is to high up on the head for that to be much protection. I will contact the companies, maybe this is something that can be addressed. I hope we can help someone else with the same problem be able to wrestle.

I would look into Morgan Head gear, it comes with a butt pad, that covers most of the front half of the head. There are several web sites, in which you can find Morgan hear gear on the internet.
