This may seem wierd but what team do you think has the best crowd. The one that stays with their team no matter what is happening. And further do you think the crowd helps the wrestlers wrestle better?

From the mouth of my 15 yr. old:
"While I'm wrestling I really don't hear anyone but the coach, but when the match is done and I hear everyone, it is nice."

You just gotta be careful what you're yelling. Last year there was a mom yelling VERY loud for her son. Problem was, she was yelling "come on baby, you can do it baby, come on baby, pin him!" For the rest of the tournament everyone in the area thought of that poor kid as "baby"!

absolutely, back in the late 80's and 90's being an AC wrestler - we had a large following and it transferred motivation to us all. This seems to change as the years pass, but AC always has a good following. This changes as teams go through "droughts" but is extremely helpfull in climbing out.

Certainly loud and supportive fans help--if you have the opportunity to watch Norton wrestle you will notice that one of the first things a Norton wrestler will do after winning a match is to acknowledge the Norton cheering section by pointing at them.

The three teams that come to mind at 321a state wrestling is Hoxie, Oberlin, and Norton. Hoxie brings their whole town, Oberlin all yell squeeze when they got a kid on their back and Norton brings quite a few fans with them.

We put more fans in the stands for a few minor duals than our basketball team did for many games. Big help for me. It's also nice to have girls to impress in the crowd by doing well.

I remember Emporia from the 90's having gi-normous crowds at home and on the road.

I will say from experience that old rival Abilene is one of the most educated teams when it comes to fans. They are very intelligent when it comes to rules, and they travel extremely well with their team. It's not uncommon to have families of former wrestlers in the stands at tournaments away from Abilene, and 99% of the time an Abilene fan is willing to shoot the bull with you and discuss anything from wrestling to life in general.

I also applaud Norton fans! Talk about a great group! I've know Coach Johnson for what seems like forever and they are just down to earth in Norton and show great respect by standing and applauding all of their athletes.

But....I must not forget that every year at 4a state one team really sticks out for me (might change now state is a further drive for them), but Mulvane fans are always loud and proud at the far north end of the arena you could always see the green mass, and hear them from across the way at the 6a mats.

There are tons of great fan supported teams and sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't. Either way though, it's hard to keep them quiet.

Fans are great. We even have fans come to challenge matches, it is held in our jr. high gym because the community is that supportive and eager to see the kids wrestle. It turns out to be quite the event!

Totally agree with Mr. Jennings, the main gym would be used for the roundballers and the wrestlers usually had the auxiliary gym. It would be SRO in the aux gym, while you went to the main gym for idle conversation. The only thing missing at the dual would be the band...a very small price to have to pay.
