I thought you guys might find this interesting as you probably had a lot of kids competing at Tulsa Nationals this weekend.

I wasn't there to see it, but at the end of the tournament the Ponderosa coaches were waiting for a kid to receive his medal and they sent the rest of the kids out to wait in the bus. A couple of minutes went by, and then one of the kids ran back in and said that Buddy Lee (the former olympian and jump-rope guy) was beating up one of the Ponderosa kids in the hall.

The coach ran out into the hall to find a big crowd surrounding what looked like a fight, and at the center he found one of the Ponderosa freshmen kids beat up and laying on the ground crying.

The story the coach got was that the kid was sort of messing around/wrestling with Buddy Lee (friendly-like) and for some unknown reason Buddy Lee just snapped and slammed the kid on a table and then started kicking him when he was on the ground.

It doesn't make sense to me either, but that's what I heard.

Knowing the kid that this happened to, I'm sure that he wouldn't have intentionally done anything to make Lee mad. He's a totally classy kid, as quiet as can be, and definetely the last kid on the Ponderosa team to deserve being assaulted by a former olympian.

Anyways, I guess the cops came (I didn't hear if they arrested Lee, but IMO they should have), and they are pressing charges against him.

Did anyone who was there see this happen?

glad to see that the united states' best doesn't have the state of mind to ignore an idiotic freshman's comments.

Is this the Buddy Lee you are referring to?

"Buddy" Lee Biography

Anthony "Buddy" Lee twice won All-America honors at Old Dominion University while earning a 122-13-2 wrestling record in 136-lb. competition.

He finished fourth in the NCAA nationals in 1980 and seventh in 1982. Lee also captured four NCAA East Regional championships and two state titles, while leading his team to two state championships.

When Lee graduated in 1982 with a degree in secondary art education, he was voted as the Senior Athlete of the Year. He also received three outstanding male athlete of the year awards at ODU, and four most-valuable-wrestler awards.

His 40-1-1 record as a sophomore established a team record for most individual wins.

Lee, who had achieved a 90-41-1 record with a state title at Highland Springs (Va.) High School, was continuing to excel at the national level in wrestling when he was inducted in 1987. A month earlier, he won his third U.S. Interservice freestyle wrestling championship and placed second in Greco-Roman competition. In three years, the U.S. Marine increased to 10 the individual national titles earned in Greco-Roman, freestyle and Sambo tournaments. That included an Armed Forces Freestyle World Championship in 1985.

"My goal is to wrestle in the 1988 Olympics, in either freestyle or Greco-Roman and maybe both," he said. His hopes of wrestling in the 1984 Olympics had been felled by a knee injury.

One key to Lee's success was his dedication in staying in shape and perfecting his techniques. Six hours a day became standard, split between early morning runs, afternoon workouts and evening saunas.

"I put the same kind of effort into my studies, with the same priority to building a mind along with body. It is a reality that this takes hard work. This makes accomplishment meaningful," he said.

Another key to his success, the All-America wrestler said, was that the ODU coaches "believed in me, pushed me to wrestle to my capability, and taught me the techniques I needed to win."

Did you hear the kid make a racial remark? I find that extremely unlikely but if you heard and saw the whole thing, I guess I can't say otherwise. I will find out.

I can not believe that that is what caused it. There is no way anything racially charged came out of that kid's mouth. That would take huge cojones and a mean spirit, and this kid has neither (and you'd probably have to be able and willing to defend yourself, both of which this kid would not have been).

The more I think about this, I realize I don't even have to ask if that was what happened. There is no way. No chance.

edit: There has to be a reason, I was thinking maybe he poked him in the eye or something like that when they were goofing around and he just lost it.

Ok, here's the real story.

This kid walked past Buddy Lee's table and said "Hey, wanna wrestle?" or something like that. Buddy Lee obliged and they sort of started half wrestling in the hall.

One of the other Ponderosa kids who was standing there apparently thought his friend needed a little help so he jumped in and grabbed Buddy Lee's leg (so both of them were trying to take Lee on). The first kid told the other kid to stop it (he was probably enjoying wrestling the former olympian by himself).

The other kid stopped and the first kid went back to wrestling Lee. At this point Lee picked up the original kid, WWF style, slammed him down on a table, and when he went down to the floor, Buddy Lee kicked him in the stomach.

Lee's explanation to the Ponderosa coaches and the cops was that he was being attacked by these two 13 year old kids.

Race had absolutely nothing to do with it, he apparently just had a meltdown on this kid who did nothing to deserve it.

Wrestlethebest1, I think that's BS that you claimed the kid made a racial remark to Lee. If you're going to say something like that, you better be sure about it.
