I went with what I have seen over the years. OK always gives us a tough match when Iowa is the next in my opinion. Mo and the Colorado with Ne coming in last.

Oklahoma has two nationally ranked teams. #8 El Reno, #24 Ponca City,

Does 2 nationally ranked teams make the state tougher as a whole? I think that traditionally, Kansas has put up more impressive performances at the high school national tournament than the other bordering states. Of course, I don't have any numbers to back that up, I'm just going off of what I remember about wrestling at nationals.

I still go with Oklahoma because they are actually cool enough to have two Division I wrestling programs. Both of which are in the top 10 consistently each year

If that's your criteria, then Iowa (Iowa, Iowa State & UNI) should be your number one. These Kansas Universities are an embarassment to the Big XII and nation for that matter, by not offering a D1 program with all of this local talent. Besides, it would be nice for KU to get a wrestling team, so that they could beat Missouri in something else too.

Oh my gosh, this is not even close. Oklahoma has won like 8 of the last 10 national dual championships and is always in the top five at the junior nationals behind states that have like 10 million plus populations and ten guys at every weight. Kansas does well though in the national duals also, there best performance a 3rd in 2001 which is great considering the state population. Kansas has done better in Greco though from time time at Fargo but Oklahoma puts absolutely no emphasis on Greco. OSU has won more NCAA DI titles, way more, than anyone else and the majority were won with Oklahoma kids. OU has also won several and also with mostly Oklahoma kids. Oklahoma has produced more Olympic medalist than any state in the country. Oklahoma has more hall of famers than any state in the country. Is that enough or should I go on.

Redstorm, you were posting while I was so I need another post. I see what you are saying, but OSU and OU have won many more NCAA DI Titles than IU, ISU and UNI, so Oklahoma gets the nod here.

Anyone else, when you talk about producing great high school wrestlers, Kansas has produced a lot of them and many have went on to very successful college careers at OSU, OU, IU, ISU, NU and MU.
Kansas would rock if we had a DI program. Obviously Iowa is better on the college level but not on the high school level as the results of the national duals, the junior nationals and high school nationals verify.

Oak Park was fourth in a tournament in KC,MO the week before they came to Baldwin and beat some of our best 4A teams. I think MO is quite a bit ahead of KS, not in terms of blue chip kids but in terms of the number of quality kids and teams.

Is Mr. Gallagher, the first Oklahoma State wrestling coach and National Wrestling Hall of Fame member your grandfather?

During a recent discussion with a member of the O.S.U. wrestling staff, your name came up and I believe he mentioned the relationship.

That is correct, my mother is a Gallagher. Unfortunately (not really) my father is a Lemon,
and alas, I do not get the honor of wearing the name. Of course, we are all very proud of Grandpa and feel very blessed. And now, both of my covers are blown. I would obviously be interested to know how my name could have possibly come up and in a discussion with whom, but you do not have to divulge that information. Have a Great Day.

I consider myself a young one but even I know about Gallagher. How do you think O-State got the name Gallagher-Iba Arena? Here is what OSU website says about Mr. Gallagher.

Edward C. Gallagher Coach 1916-40 Started Oklahoma State on its road to greatness in the sport of wrestling. As an athlete earned recognition in track and football, but as a coach excelled in the sport of wrestling. Put his first Aggie varsity wrestling team on the mat in 1916, the same year became director of athletics. Applied engineering knowledge of leverage and stress to the development of more than 300 wrestling holds. Was the first to organize systematic practices and paid close attention to diet and training methods. In 23 years of coaching, produced 19 undefeated teams. Won 138 dual meets with five losses and four ties, and before 1932 won 68 consecutive meets. In the first NCAA Tournament in 1928, fourA&M wrestlers out of seven possibilities won individual titles to clinch the first national collegiate team title. Coached in 13 NCAA Tournaments, winning 10 and tying for first in the 11th. Guided 37 individual NCAA champs, 32 national amateur titleholders and three Olympic gold medalists.

Mr. Furches was attempting humor. He well knows where Gallagher is from, as Mr. Lemon and I had a discussion regarding inclusion of Mr. Gallagher into the Kansas Hall of Fame last fall.

Mr. Lemon failed to state that Gallagher was his grandfather and hence the reason I asked the question.

I really don't know how anyone can rank Kansas over Oklahoma or Iowa in wrestling. The prof is in the pudding. I concede to the greatness of OSU over the years, but I think things would be different if Dan the man was back leading the Hawkeyes.
