if you where pyle and you had the chance to repay somebody who stopped you from being a 4 time state champ would you not want revenge as in pyle vs. drennan this year?

True champions don't need revenge, and they certainly don't go out of their way to get it. If Pyle and Drennen wind up at the same weight at State, it would be a great rematch. But if they don't meet, they're both great champions. And neither has anything to prove

Champions don't go after revenge?!?!?!?! R u an idiot???? Champsions have more heart than you can imagine, they hate losing, it's a terrible feeling. I'm sure both of them think about a rematch on a daily basis and are looking forward to it. I can't get over this.....you must be a real moron to say that champions don't go after revenge.

It is pretty important to have enough focus to wrestle whoever your "next" opponent is. This reminds me of 2 years ago when Baker of Hoxie and Campbell of Oakley had been beaten by Miller of Oberlin the year before. Each went to different classes and won state instead of having to prove they could beat Miller. Oh yes Pyle and Drennan did go to Millers weight and oh yeah Pyle won state as did Baker and Campbell. Miller took third. The state finals tape I have from public tv didn't say a thing about Baker and Campbell being obsessed because they never could get revenge on Miller. It was Campbell who was named 3a wrestler of the year, but I guess he still feels bad because he never got revenge? I doubt that very much. I'll bet he is proud of his accomplishments and still has great respect for Miller.

I guess some people don't read moron well...
I never said that champions don't want revenge; on the contrary, if opportunity presents itself, that's great. But shaping your entire senior season toward one match in February (that conceivably could never happen) is silly.
As it was so aptly just put, the only important match is the next one. That's the only match that matters to a true champion. If that next match happens to be against someone you can get a little payback on, that's just gravy. Obsession is for suckers, and suckers usually lose in the end.

Techincally Champions don't need revenge, becuase champions would have won the match. Thats just logic there. Drennen and Pyle are both great wrestlers but it would be a shame to lose a match becuase you wrer focusing too much on one person.

It is one thing to want to wrestle somebody enough to move up a weight class if you meet in a dual, maybe even if you meet in an invitational tournament. Any real competitor would do this. (some do the opposite) But to obsess to the point of setting your entire senior season on the possibility of being able to wrestle one person. That is pretty ridiculous and immature. Also, Pyle has beaten Drennan before and even if they were to meet another 10 times and Pyle won them all, it wouldn't change anything Drennan would still be the 2002 state champion and Pyle the 2000, and 2001 state champ. A match wrestled is over and win or lose, you need to get ready for the next one, and move on. You kids will come to find this is an important lesson for life. It happens there too.

Revenge might be a little too harsh of a description. But for individuals as talented, dedicated and gifted as Pyle & Drennan it might be the satisfaction of knowing that they won the rubber match of the series en route to another state title that causes them seek out the opportunity to compete against each other.

I think it is unfortunate this topic ever got brought up. It is kind of like trying to goad kids in to this non-sense with some notion that if they don,t....... It is kind of like picking a fight for someone else. Kids doing it is one thing. Adults doing it?????????????????? Neither of these two kids are biting. I guess it is because they walk the walk. My salute to Pyle and Drennan.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I am certainly not trying to "goad" anyone into anything. But what I am doing, admittedly in what is somewhat of a selfish manner, is hoping to witness what would be the most anticipated rematch in memory.
Fanatic, you are certainly entitled to your opinion and I will respect you for voiceing it. But I choose to disagree on this subject matter for the following reason.
In February of 2001, following his state championship loss to Matt Pyle, Shawn Drennan purportedly announced that he would be competing at whatever weight Pyle chose to compete at the following year, regardless of his own size.
In doing so he raised several eyebrows and heard a lot of folks express doubt in his judgement. But in doing so, and holding true to his word, he also earned a lot of respect.
His commitment and effort paid off in what was probably the most exciting match at last year's 3-2-1A state meet.
I'm sorry, but I see nothing wrong with that type of commitment and/or strategy. And if Pyle chose to do the same this year, it would only add to the incredible amount of respect that I already hold for him - regardless of the eventual outcome.
Again, please feel free to disagree if you so choose. All I ask is that you please do not hold me in contempt for expressing a differing opinion.
