Maybe this year we will get a first place. Tanner would be a guess for a first place. I think Hemmerling will be top 5, and I think Venegas will have to wrestle at the top of his game to be an All-American, but I think he can do it.

What's been the top finish in the last couple of years? I remember Joe Johnston got second at 145, but I don't remember anyone better than that recently.

Venegas lost to Duffy from Salina Central, didn't he? He is a quality heavyweight, but I don't think he is quite all-american material.
--Sidenote--In 1998 Scott Coleman became Kansas' first national champion. He recently won his match by fall in the Iowa State vs. Oklahoma State dual.

Just a note.... Scott Coleman was not Kansas first national champion. Justin Ware pinned his way through the national tourney a about five or six years before that.

Kelly Gabel (171) from St. Francis placed second in 1999 and should have won. He was beaten in the last few seconds of the match with an illegal hold by a kid from Georgia now wrestling for NC State. Ironically, Brine from Goddard pinned Gabel in the E-W Classic just a week prior - go figure!

Yep we have really had a lot of placers in that meet. A kid from Spring Hill whose name escapes me at the moment took first or second in about 89 at 189. I am sure the spring hillers on here will know. Seamonds I think his name was. We have had a fair amount of success there.

There are 3 seniors at 145 321a that all got a a good shot at all-american. Bogart in 6A is he is a senior, too.

yeah, I know Venegas lost to Duffy, but it was Kids, and I don't think Venegas was taking kids wrestling seriously, kids wrestling is for fun, at the oldest age. If Venegas wrestled Duffy now, Venegas would pin him easily, and dont forget Venegas beat Hemmerling this summer. I think Venegas will be an All-American.

Lyle Geyer from Leoti won nationals also. In that year if they would have kept team points Kansas may have won the tourney--so I hear.

Yeah, because obviously you go 8,000,000,000-0 like Gardner just by stalling and running from people. (If that was the case, I'd be freaking world champion.) D-to-the-izzoosh.
