They should have a category for those above 4.0, like if your school offers A.P. category classes which are usually college level and those classes are based on a 5.0 scale meaning if you have a B then you really have an A but if you have an A then you have above a 4.0.

I'm with Shoes. There is a school in KCK where many of the wrestlers are not only taking AP classes, but carrying a full IB load and I don't see a single one of them on that list, although several of them were also at State. I'm not sure how this list is put together, but I am curious. Whose responsibility is it to get the names and GPA to the right people (whoever that might be, sorry I'm ignorant in this altogether, I guess) to even be considered? My son, who is very bright (Duke's Talent Search for many years) goes to a HS that gives no homework and actually little work at all. He has an awesome GPA. My daughter has to work for hers at the KCK school I mentioned above, and all of her classes are either AP or IB. The wrestlers at this school are carrying a full load of AP/IB and wrestle as well as participate in other sports.

To qualify for the KWCA All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a .500 winning percentage record with I believe 10 or 15 varsity matches at the minimum (I am uncertain of that exact numer off the top of my head). The wrestler must have a 3.0 GPA to be Honorable Mention, and a 3.5 GPA to be named First Team.
The wrestler must be nominated by their head coach, who was sent an informational letter and nomination form before the season was over. This is the process that is used every year for the selection of this team.
As for a "category for above 4.0"; not all schools offer a weighted grading scale, many students would not have the opportunity to attain that. Personally, I think a "First Team" honor is sufficient recognition.
Hope this answers your questions about the All-Academic team. It is a great way to honor student-athletes to pat them on the back for their work and efforts on the mat as well as in the classroom.
I spent a couple years serving as KWCA Academic chair, and it really relies on coaches participating in the process to make it work.
Regards, Kit Harris KWCA Vice President

Weighted grades schmated grades. Those are for nerds, like Prant. That reminds of of a story. Prant got a B+++++ in a class, which happens to be his only B ever. HA!
So this kid is putting on his shoes right, and his mom says, honey you're putting your shoes on the wrong feet, and the little kid says, no mom these are my feet

Why did he not just go to the principal, whine about getting a B, then he could either have had the teacher raise his grade, or drop the class before grades came out so it didn't affect his GPA

Thanks for the info. I;m fairly sure that we had several boys who would have qualified for that, but perhaps the coach forgot to send in the paperwork. Teaching and Coaching are not easy jobs to do, and for those of us in education, gosh don't we love more paperwork! Still, it is a shame for these young people.

Hovpen-
Because I learned more from that class than any other class I took in high school, that's why I didn't whine. (And because I don't need a waaambulance like Jhris.) Weighted grades are for suckers. The class shouldn't be about improving GPA, it should be about **learning** something. Grades are unimportant. And totally gay.

Prant learned plenty in high school. While my spelling abilities are a God-given talent, I learned much about government from the best government teacher/wrestling coach in the state. I also learned how to be a state title-winning journalist, baby. Mentor forever.
I did not, however, learn science. (Nor do I want to.)
