My son ( age 10) really enjoys wrestling but he also enjoys baseball and football. He has done well in wrestling qualifying for state the past 2 years and placing at state.

At age 10 will missing out on free style hurt him or should he just be a kid for now and play baseball, football..... I dont want him to get burned out which I see happens to a lot of kids.

He does go to a wrestling camp in the summer.

Those of you who go to Derby Freestlye at a young age is this really worth it at this age. There were some kids who went to it last year who are in our club and I really did not see that big of a difference from last year to this year or in the other kids who I know go to these.

Is it more for HS vs 5th graders??

thanks

Wait a while and then have a talk with your son about this summer. Let the choice be his, with no pressure. My grandson, played rec. basketball and missed the first two tournaments that he could have gone to because of it.
It was his choice. He placed 6th at state in the 12&u 76#, even though some that placed higher, go to camps and wrestle in the summer. It's tough to go against these wrestlers, but it is a choice that he made. In years to come he will benefit from the loses that he had at state, which will prepare him for things that will go against him in the future.

Just tell your son that you love him no matter what he decides. I'm 60 and my son is 39 and whenever we end a phone call or depart when we are in person, we always end with I love you. When my grandson gets ready to get on the mat, my son tells him (that he loves him when he gets on the mat and that no matter what happens, he will love him when he comes off the mat). Of course my son, will scold him, when he comes off the mat if he should act wrong. You will have to decide, using your own judgement. Which involes time, expenses and other family members.

The most beautiful thing to see on a basketball court, is wall to wall wrestling mats.

I think freestyle is great for those that want to but baseball is too. I like the camp idea and think that is a great way to go. Once they hit 8th grade freshmen in high school then get him going more often to freestyle wrestling.

Not promoting one camp or another but from conversations I hear on here- I would find him a great takedown camp to attend and not just a local camp. Takedowns are what college coaches are looking for- (maybe or maybe not)

Take him to some practices and then take him to a tournament and if he likes it let him keep on wrestling. The more matches the better he gets.
