Well its very simplistic, but thats what it comes down to. The kids taht are the best gets the higher seeds, the kids with the worst records get put up against the best. The idea is for each match to get progresively harder, and for teh best two kids to end up in finals.

I guess what I was asking is in what order do they start the seeding.
Does a State Qualifier have priority seeding over a Freshman with a better record?

SUGGESTED SEEDING PROCEDURES

The number of contestants who are seeded may vary from one weight class to the next, but every effort should be made to treat like situations in a uniform manner.

Tournament directors should establish the criteria for seeding prior to commencing the actual seeding meeting.

*Drawings to place competitors on the tournament bracket should be made immediately after the verification of entries.

*If there are two outstanding wrestlers in a weight class, one should be placed in the upper half of the bracket and one in the lower half of the bracket.

*If there are several wrestlers of nearly equal ability, they should be assigned positions based on their seeds.

*A seeded contestant shall have the same opportunity to draw for the byes as other contestants in his bracket.

The following criteria order is not mandated nor is it intended to be an all-inclusive list.

Items/factors for consideration for determining seeds:

*Records against common opponents;
Head-to-head
Other common opponents

*Returning champion or runner-up in the same weight class;

*Wrestler with exceptional record against acknowledged strong competition;

*Contestant with best overall record
At weight class entered
Overall record

Record should mean very little. Some teams do not wrestle anyone and come into regionals with great records and below average wrestlers. Teams like Colby, Scott City, Goodland have kids with ok records that are pretty damn good because they wrestle a tough schedule.

Does the 1 seed always draw the bye if there are only seven in an eight man bracket?

No

The reason being is that it penailzes the 1 seed by denying him bonus team points for pin, tech fall, or a major decision. All he would pick up would be his 2 advancement points. Rule 10-3-3.....when byes are required for the first round, they shall be placed by mutual consent or drawn so that they are distributed evenly throughout the bracket.....
By rule, it would be possible to mutually agree in the seeding meeting that the high seeds be given byes, but most coaches want the bonus points that they can pick up.

Good point about strength of schedule record to me holds no water.
1. Head to head
2. record vs. common opponent
3. returning state placer at same weight
4. returning state placer
5. returning state qualifier at same weight

Go down the list and if that doesn't decide a seed then put numbers in the jar and lets draw.

I agree with Pepsi man completely!!

criteria usually reads...record vs acknowledged strong opposition.

And if two wrestlers are 1 and 1 against each other it goes to who won last.

I agree with the fact that some teams do not have the same strength of schedule as others. But records have to count for something, or else why keep them!
Also most times seeding meetings go in this order:
1. head to head
2. Common opponent(although at times this is overlooked)
3. State Placing
4. State Qual.
5. Record vs. acknowledged strong opponents

My question is a wrestler moving up a weight at times hurts them, when we all know that many kids never wrestle in the same weight class more than once. WHy does State placement have the "same weight" clause?
My State Champ is just as tough if not tougher at 145 than he was at 130 last year. Does this mean that at Regionals, a kid with only one loss(same # of losses, fewer wins)should get placed ahead of him if he is at the same weight that he was at last year and is a State placer?
Do I question the strength of his schedule! Many coaches balk at the idea of some one telling them their competetion is soft!

Here's the nice thing about wrestling- it usually comes out in the wash. Translation: the best wrestlers on that day/weekend almost always place. Some of the best coaches I have ever seen have put little time or effort into the seeding process. It will all be settled on the mat anyway!
