Everyone in the state thought Goddard would run away with the state title and you pulled off the upset. From what I saw Manhattan wrestled as well as they had all season and caught a couple of breaks. That is part of the sport and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You deserved the title. Goddard is a very good team--it just wasn't their tournament.

I respectfully request your post be changed. The Goddard team did not throw their 2nd place trophy on the floor!!! The trophy was sat down on the mat in front of our team.
The team refused to have their picture taken with the trophy without their teammate (Fisher) present. Brent Fisher was understandably caught up in the emotions of the moment feeling as though he had let his teammates down and was avoiding the public eye.
In fact, our team showed alot of class! As I went to get Brent to the mat for pictures the team decided to bring the trophy to him. The entire team excused themselves to the outer tunnel where we took numerous team pictures with the trophy and Brent included.
I will not go into the comments made by Manhattan wrestlers and cheerleaders during this time. I also don't harbour any bad feelings since they didn't know what was taking place. I applaud Manhattan for their efforts this weekend. They showed up and wrestled well and deserved the state title. I am happy for Coach Gonz and his team and very happy with the way my team wrestled in response to the controversy. I don't agree with what happened. However, I told my team we will not make excuses and will focus on the positive. Four individual champions and a 2nd place finish. A great accomplishment in and of itself.
Any negative comments on this forum about the Goddard or Manhattan wrestling teams, coaching staffs, etc. regarding this weekend will only be made by uninformed people.
Respectfully,
Brett Means GHS Wrestling

Congrats to Gonzo and the Manhattan team on your championship. I didn't get to see any of the action in 5 or 6A but it looked like a pretty good contest.

Nice Job Gonzo-you deserve it, but the paper sure made you sound like a "nice" guy-not the joker I know! Hope to see you at the Metro, East/West, and you better be goin to Naitonals in Vr. You could soak up some rays on the beach, although I don't know if I want to see that! COngrats, Coach Brown

I do have to say one think that i did not agree with they way Goddard represented themselves this year. I like watching them wrestle but i do not like to watch how they conduct themselves. Congrats to MANHATTAN

Congrats to Manhattan great for them to come through on what many would have called a down year.
Not to take anything away from Manhattan but 5a and 6a should be combined in wrestling. Frankly many kids that may not even qualify for 3a or 4a state, place in 5a and 6a because of the limited number of teams. There are many good wrestlers in 5a & 6a dont take this wrong. But the state tournament should be harder. There are a lot tougher regular season tournaments than 5a & 6a state.

Gonzo,
Wow, what a tourney! Congrats to you and your team on the State Championship. You know no matter what the year, it is difficult to win a state championship and requires a tremendous amount of time and effort from both the Coaches and wrestlers. Well done!
