Curious on seeding 8 year-olds.. realize there are not many 8 year-olds in the lower weight groups, but do 8 year-olds automatically get a higher seed over the 6 year-olds?
My understanding is that you can not use your 6 & under record in the seeding meeting unless they are all 6 year olds. If the 6 year old wrestled at 8 & under in the intended weight they plan on wrestling at subdistrict they could use that record. If an eight year old wrestled all year at say 55 lbs and had a 33-2 record but decided to move up to 58 lbs he can not carry his record up to the next weight. He could carry his record down to 52 lbs.
That's all well and good, but isn't the priority to get the best wrestlers seeded. If you exclude a 6U that is better than all but two or three from a top four seed, you do not get the best wrestling for the whole bracket. The overall picture should be used of the wrestler, just as in looking at a wrestler and taking into account some of his matches from a large national tourney being weighed more than small local tourneys.
We felt this way back when our son was 6u, and we still do. If you want him with the 8 and unders, wrestle him with them all year. Don't whine about the competition, or where he is seeded. Go in do your thing, and remember you are younger competition. why should they wrestle younger all year and get seeded in a more experianced, older group of kids at the end of the season. Good Luck.
D2 had a couple of 8U weights that had 6U kids seeded higher than the 8U and the kids didnt move on. They used there 6U record in seeding and that should not count. It just messed up the bracket and made kids that should been seeded higher meet up before they had too. If you know that your 6U is going to wrestle 8U state wrestle a few local tournaments at that weight so you can say that you should be seeded higher. Undfeated records at 6u does not mean you can beat the 8U boys. Grant it there is alot of them that can at the lighter weights. Good luck to all that moved on.
