Most of Team Kansas arrived at KCI at 5 am and boarded a 6:30 flight! Most of Team Kansas arrived in Virginia Beach just a few minutes ago. Most of Team Kansas is worn slick!

I will be reporting on all the festivities and happenings from the NHSCA Senior Nationals. (there are no planned encounters with Waunita this trip) Weigh-ins are tomorrow at 2 pm.

Right now everyone is catching a nap trying to re-charge their batteries!! I think I will do the same!

Now you have told Waunita where you are. I am sure she will be on the next plane.

Good Luck Team Kansas

A second gaggle of wrestlers and parents just arrived from the airport! If everyone who is on the list shows up, we should have 32 Seniors competing!

Also, in conjunction with the tourney this year, is a competition for freshmen, sophomore, and junior wrestlers! Kansas is represented by a hand full of these underclassmen. I will try to get over to venue later and get a report on these Kansans!

... and reports are coming in to this reporter that make some startling claims about an unnamed Kansas coach!

It seems that a certain coach from North Central Kansas had never seen the ocean! While reports from the home front say that it is balmy in Kansas, it is about 50 degrees with a North wind blowing at Virginia Beach! Apparently the reaction to his first view of the ocean ... was to jump in!!

It's not quite the Polar Bear plunge but certainly cool enough to steal ones breath!

I see R Cotton lost by injury default in his first match...What happened? Will he be able to wrestle on the back side?

Atticus said Romero was up 4 to 1. Easily in control. He was on top and did (I don't know my moves too well but I think Steve Foster used to call it the Tulsa ride) (take the arm out to the side and bring it up and place your head under it to turn the kid). At any rate - Romero runs it and the other kids crys out. The ref stops the match. The other coach complains and the kid won't continue. Ref never signaled potentially dangerous or anything. So now Romero is on the back side. Frustrating to say the least.

I ventured over to the venue to watch the underclassmen. I saw Aldon Isenberg, Scott Elliott, and Tyler Stokes all win matches!

I also saw Tyler Koehn end up on the short end of the score. I don't know what happened in Romero Cottons first match but I did see him lose a match. His opponent ended up with a shoulder injury that was caused by what the official claimed was an illegal hold! The opponent won by disqualification!

More later!

Romero was ahead 4-1 and was on top in the second. He had a wrist and was working the head lever and then switched it to what I call a Turkey Bar. He was stepping over the head and the opponent let out a scream.

The ref whistled a stop to the action and he began questioning the kid. Then the ref then signaled 1-point for the kid and started the injury clock. Time ran out ... the kid was rolling his shoulder around ... his coach went back to his chair and sat down ... the referee was discussing the matter with the kid ... then the ref signaled a win for the injured wrestler.

I'm by no means one to bash the officials but what the heck is that??? I can understand how the official wouldn't have had time to signal potentially dangerous (ecspecially as explosive as Cotton is), but how can you DQ a kid for it?
What does the rulebook state about that type of DQ? To me, it's almost "double jeapordy" to penalize 1 point, then DQ him after the fact...Someone please explain. Thanks in advance...

Explaination..

Referee ruled it an illegal hold. Opponent gets 2 minutes recovery time. If he chooses not to continue in the match then he wins by injury default, its a simple as that. The real question is, did the kid's coach tell him not to continue knowing he was over matched? We will never know. It's a terrible thing to happen at this type of event, but all the more reason to make sure you don't execute moves which by their nature are potentially dangerous. Chicken wings, hammerlocks, etc. etc.
