2007-08 Wrestling Schedule
10/3/2007

"The Newman University Wrestling team released its schedule for the 2007-08 season," fourth year Wrestling coach Mark Stovall announced. The Newman Jets will begin the season with the annual Labette Takedown Tournament in Parsons, Kan. on Nov. 3rd. Prior to the LCC Takedown Tournament, however, the Jets will compete in the Red and Blue Varsity Wrestle-Offs at home on October 26 at 7 p.m. The Jets will offer a $5 clinic for all wrestlers from the ages of 5-12 45 minutes before the action begins.

The team will start dual competition when the Jets host the Beavers from Pratt Community College at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8th. Next Saturday, the grapplers will head to Mitchell, South Dakota for the Dakota Wesleyan University Open.

On Nov. 18, the squad will travel to Golden, Colo. for the Colorado School of Mines Duals. The very next day, the Jets will travel north to Greeley, Colo. for the Northern, Colorado Open.

The Thanksgiving break will prove to be a competitive holiday weekend when the Newman University squad travels to Norman, Okla. for the always tough Oklahoma Open. The Jets will face opponents from perennial power house Oklahoma State and other Division I teams.

In December, Stovall’s team will wrestle in two tournaments. One of which is the Fort Hays State University Open in Hays, Kan. on the 1st. The following Saturday, the Jets will host the Newman Open.

The Jets will bring in the year of 2008 with a home dual against the Colorado School of Mines. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The dual action will continue that weekend when the team travels down to Dallas, Texas for the Lone Star Duals. Dual action doesn’t stop there. The team will then travel to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NWCA) National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Jan. 12 and 13. Coach Stovall’s team is in a transition period, as the school recently moved up from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Because of the probationary period, the Jets will compete against teams in the NCWA at the prestigious National Duals. “There is nothing ‘club’ about teams like GrandValleyState and Central Florida,” said Coach Stovall. “I have a lot of respect for teams in the NCWA, but I am confident that this year’s team will have a very successful year.”

The Jets host two more home duals against foes Fort Hays State University (FHSU)and Central Missouri State University. The FHSU dual will begin at 7 p.m. on January 25. The last home action will start at 7 p.m. on February 13 against the CMSU Mules.

The Jets will close out the dual season when they travel down to Oklahoma City for the Oklahoma City University (OCU) quadrangular. The Jets will face the likes of OCU, Missouri Baptist, and McKendree University.

The post-season competition begins with the NCWA Conference Tournament at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. on March 1. The season closes when the team travels to Lakeland, Florida for the NCWA National Tournament. The host is Central Florida, and competition will be on March 13 - 14.
