Thank you.

Among other accomplishments, Brent Fisher was a Kids State Champion in 03 and 04, beating CJ Napier in the 2004 final. His Freshman year at Andale HS, he went 31-7 and placed 3rd at 4A State. In 06, he went 24-5 and took 2nd at 4A State. Last year in 6A, he was 24-1 before exiting the tournament just before his match with Almaguer in the semis by a DQ. He has also wrestled for team Kansas in many National dual events.

Congrats to Derby for a great tournament. Regarding the OW issue, it is always subjective, just like MVP in baseball etc. The truely most dominant wrestler at Derby was Disney. There is not a wrestler at the tournament that could have stepped on the mat and competed. Really, the take home message from Derby was that
cutting weight gives you a significant advantage between 2 good wreslters (Detmer, Arnold,Maple, Means etc.. were much bigger and stronger than their opponents. Message number 2 is to get the first takedown. The close matches, i.e. Means, Keller) etc. were decided by the first takedown. Cut down to your lowest weight and get the first takedown, and don't mess with Disney.

dwelsh,

To add to your question about Atticus Disney from above....Mr. Disney and Atticus are both too humble and gracious....Atticus is one of the top wrestlers in the country, but more importantly (IMO) he is one of the best young men I have ever had the opportunity to work with.

I had the good fortune to have Atticus attend a camp with us this past summer. His wrestling results speak for themselves but he is a really gracious, good young man. He was a good leader for the younger high schoolers we had and he was a great role model and friend to my 8 year old son. It was a real pleasure and honor to have him as part of our team for the camp we attended.

Just wanted to mention the fact that I was extremely impressed with the degree of civility and extent of sportsmanship exhibited by the several champions (and other elite wrestlers) who had the misfortune to lose on that particular night. After the matches were over, in the main, they simply got up, shook hands withtheir opponents, the refs, opposing coaches and retreated to their corners. They are to be commended for their conduct in the face of such disappointment. It was refreshing to see.

My fav. match of the night would go to Houlden/Nelson ... Great scrambles n some straight brawling .. I look for Houlden to wear him out again n get the win when they next meet.

Chase, i agree. That was awesome and no disrespect to Nelson, but he really did seem gassed that whole third period. Houlden and all the Goddard kids I watched seem to be like energizer bunnies! BIG GAS TANKS! Very cool.

Well said. I agree. The sportsmanship by all the finalists was as impressive as their wrestling. EXCELLENT!

Was there for the semis and finals. All the wrestlers talked about for OW were very impressive. I would have picked Maple.
He beat a 3X time champ in the semis and then won his Final vs a state champ or runner up with ease. Both he and Deshazer were great on their feet and in excellent shape. They took down their opponents and cut them several times each in the Semis and the Finals and neither ever looked tried or winded. Could not say the same for their opponents, they were worn out by the end of the 2 period. Mitch Arnold wrestled a great match vs. Caldwell, but he was tried and just held on at the end.

Bullwrestler, I would agree with you on Maple. DeShazer hasn't showed that he is a complete wrestler yet as he avoids the mat. Maple wrestles well top, bottom, and on his feet. Great wrestling and clearly great sportsmanship especially from those that lost as mentioned by Svo69.

Yea Nelson controlled the wrestling on their feet for the first minute or to then seem to gas fairly quickly... And in those close matches lungs can play a huge role .. but that was definitly my favorite match

Just a reminder: Bishop Carroll & Goddard meet up again at the Chanute Tournament on January 26, 2008. The Caldwell/Arnold - Detmer/Fisher re-matches should prove to be quite interesting!

I wonder if Goddard will be at full force for this tournament .. I seen they were missing Bonewell and Beard for the Derby tournament ... even then I don't know if that would have been enough to cover that point spread at derby ... Was Carrol missing anyone at the Derby tournament?

I noted that Beard didn't wrestle at the Derby tournament. I heard that he is recuperating from an injury. If he does recuperate in time for the Chanute Tournament, his presumed match-up with Tyler Koehn from Pittsburgh should be a good match.
