1/18/2008- Licoln, Illinois; Panther Wrestling goes 3-0 at Lincoln Duals
The 9th ranked Neosho Panther wrestling squad headed up to Lincoln College for the Lincoln Duals this past Saturday. The day got started in a big way with Neosho cruising to a 39-9 victory over 2nd year program Rend Lake College. The Panthers won the first 3 weights by forfeits, before Barnsdall, Oklahoma freshman Ty Jaquess picked up a 7-3 decision, and Shreveport, Louisiana freshman Dustin Burton picked up another forfeit win to push the Panthers ahead 27-0. Rend Lake College would finally squeak onto the board when James Perez of RLC edged Neosho Freshman Drakkar Klose 9-8 with the deciding point being riding time. Jason Green (sophomore- Pawnee, Oklahoma) then came on at 174 and dispatched of his foe with a 1st period fall, before the Panthers forfeited at 184lbs. Skiatook, Oklahoma freshman Sam Robbins then took to the mat at 197 and used a late 3rd period takedown to break a 1-1 tie and claim a 3-1victory. Not to be outdone, Islip, New York freshman Christian Wintons dug deep in his first match back on the mats in over a month to pull out a tough 5-3 overtime win. FINAL SCORE: NEOSHO 39 Rend Lake 9
Next up for the Panthers on the day was host Lincoln College which is currently ranked 12th in the NJCAA. St. Louis, Missouri freshman Donte Butler met an upset minded Ryan Lessner who came in unranked and hungry to knock off the 3rd ranked Neosho grappler. Trailing going into the 2nd period, Butler used his quickness to score 5 points but was only up by 1 heading into the 3rd stanza of the match. Lessner was able to score an escape to tie the match, but Butler’s 1 minute plus time advantage from the top position gave him an extra point and a narrow 8-7 win. Rory Kendall (Fr- Vinita, Ok) then took to the mat like a man possessed and in the process picked up an 11-0 major decision.
Jeremy Lawley (Fr-Tulsa, Oklahoma) then took to the mat and had a late 3rd period takedown to clinch a 3-1 decision. Ty Jaquess then stepped onto the mat to face 6th ranked Justin Hale. Hale controlled the match with a 1st period takedown and then followed up with an escape and another takedown to lead 5-0 going into the 3rd period. Jaquess countered a Hale scoring opportunity late in the 3rd period and caught the ranked foe on his back and registered the come from behind fall, much to the dismay of the local Lincoln fans.
Neosho now lead 16-0 heading into the 157 match where Allegan, Michigan freshman Ty Caron made his debut in a tough way, by losing a 15-0 tech fall. Dustin Burton bumped up to 165 for this dual and lost on a late takedown 5-4 and then Drakkar Klose up at 174 lost a slim 7-6 match as well, now putting the team score at 15-10 following a 3 match swing for Lincoln and a pair of point deductions on both teams. At 184, Green’s 6-0 victory over a tough Ryan Lamagra swung momentum back into the Panther’s corner, as Sam Robbins followed suite at 197 with a decision of his own and Billerica, Massachusetts freshman- Dan Pynn accepted the forfeit victory at heavyweight. Final Score: NEOSHO 27 Lincoln 10
Final match of the day came against 15th ranked Ellsworth Community College out of Iowa. Jared Grigg made his debut for the Panthers with a 7-5 match to get things rolling for Neosho. Rory Kendall continued his strong showing on the day and went unscored on for the entire competition, this time winning a 4-0 decision. Jeremy Lawley accumulated 4 takedowns in a 13-6 route, before Ty Jaquess and Dustin Burton both picked up forfeit wins at 149 and 157 respectively. Drakkar Klose, filling in at 165 clinched an overtime win with a takedown to win 3-1 and Jason Green finished his day 3-0 with a 7-2 decision of his own. At 184 Neosho was open and surrendered 6 points to Ellsworth, but then Sam Robbins at 197 came back and pulled off another overtime victory in this dual for the Panthers with an identical 3-1 decision. To end the day, heavyweight backup Dan”Boston” Pynn took to the mat and trailed only 2-0 heading into the 3rd, but taking down position in the last period proved to what his foe wanted, as a very strong top wrestler turned Dan on 2 separate occasions racking up 4 more points on nearfalls and finishing the match with a riding time point to beat Boston by a 7-0 margin. FINAL SCORE: NEOSHO 30 ELLSWORTH 9
