Norton/Kearney should have been a good one.

Coach Johnson's match summary is below:

Kearney Ne. humbles the Jays 49-10.

Bluejays rebound to shut out Hays High 82-0.

In the first dual the highly ranked Kearney Ne. wrestling team dominated a short-handed Norton squad by a 49-10 score.
Freshman Troy Bainter put the Bluejays on top with an 8-2 victory at 103 lbs. But the Kearney Bearcats would win the next 5 matches to take a comanding 21-3 lead. Todd Bolt’s 13-0 Major Dec. at 140 lbs. gave the Bluejays a little life. But the Bearcats would go on to win the next 6 bouts to make the score 43-7. Then Sophomore Robert Derauf got a nice 6-4 win at 215 lbs. to make the team score 43-10. Norton was open at Hwt making the final score 49-10.

The Bluejays held out two of their best wrestlers due to injuries. 2 x State medalist Junior Zach Bainter and Sr. Hwt Alex Thomas –3rd in the State in 2007. Even if both of these kids had got pins for the Jays, we could not have changed the outcome of the match. But the score would have definitely been much more respectable.

We also lost a few close matches that if we could have turned them around we could have made the score respectable. At 135 lbs. Freshman Spencer Shirk filled in for an injuried Zach Bainter and almost pulled out a win losing a 5-4 dec. Another close match was at 152 lbs. were Sr. Jeff Soderlund lost a 3-1 OT Dec. and also at 171 lbs. Junior Jordan Bebb dropped a 7-11 dec. All of these matches could have went either way, but we lost all of them, it was simply not our night. Hopefully we will learn from the lesson Kearney gave us tonight.

One positive thing that came out of the action, The Junior Varsity team went 7-1 against the Kearney Team.

In the second Dual against a very young Hays High Team, The Bluejays dominated every match by fall or forfeit. Not much to say about this dual, No close matches. See Results.

The summary says it was a "short-handed" Norton team against Kearny, but why was Norton open at 285 vs. Kearney and not against Hays?

I can't believe Hays High is this far down. Injuries and inexperience have a lot to do with it but sheeesh...this is really bad. Of course dualing Norton and Kearney isn't easy either.

Read somewhere that those 2 duals made Kearney 22-0 in duals this year. Not too bad.
