This is certainly a mute point this year because Kansas is dotted with outstanding heavyweights, but is it possible for a freshman to break through and win 285 pounds? The closest I can recall came 3 years ago when Elijah Madison of Salina Central reached the 5A state finals (if I'm recalling correctly). We've seen some tremendous jumps from freshman to sophomore year (Ex: Andrew Ubben and Duane Zlatnik). Zlatnik was just a qualifier in '05 before winning the first of what will be three 3-2-1A State titles. I think Dylan Salmans of Hoxie will be a great heavyweight, but as a freshman he won't compete for a state title. Any other heavyweights place high at state in years past?

I think a HWT is easier for freshman than 189. It also depends on the age of the freshman. Many freshman are not 14 anymore.

Based on my current calculations, if the current trend continues..... the 2009 HWT 6A Champ could be won by a 3 year old chimp name marco. But thats only because we all know how easy 5A and 6A is.

Or maybe you should have wrestled 215 considering that its only a 5 pound drop.

This couldn't be further from the truth. While 189 generally has more outstanding wrestlers, heavyweight is generally reserved for older, more seasoned upper classmen. The maturity of an upperclass heavyweight's body will continue to make it nearly impossible for a freshman to win state at 285. If a freshman holds the varsity spot for the majority of the year and has a winning record it is amazing.
