I was speaking to another coach, trying to figure out why out of 350 wrestlers at Burden, there were 80 scratches. Was it the weather? Was it sickness? or Was it the competition? If Track wrestling did not post the brackets before the tournament....would there be so many scratches? Comments.....

From my experience, there aren't a lot of fair weather wrestling families out there. We are probably not the smartest group of people out there when it comes to the risk of driving in less than desirable weather/road conditions to get our kids to a tournament.

Sickness and/or injuries likely plays a significant role, at least I know that my kids have all been sick a lot this winter. I am sure it would be greatly appreciated if people would let the tournament know of known scratches ahead of time (if not a last minute illness).

That brings me to your final question, the competition. There is little doubt that a lot of us are looking at who is going to be in an upcoming tournament when we can see the list of wrestlers in advance. Again, rabid wrestling fanatics that we all are, I would like to think that seeing a age group/weight class full of studs doesn't make people decide that they have something better to do that weekend. Sometimes your wrestlers just have to take their lumps, learn from them, and hopefully it will fuel their love and respect for the sport even further.

I know that I havn't answered your questions definitively as to why there are so many scratches. I would believe that it is more likely that illness/injury play the biggest role (unless the weather is extremely bad, then weather would be a bigger factor). As for tough competition, you might consider a different sport if you find yourself pulling your wrestler from a tournament to avoid it.

I know that I enjoy seeing the competition ahead of time, but its to be prepared, not to be scared. I am more likely to skip a tourn where my son would only have C/D comp. in his bracket. We get very excited whenever we see that Beeson or Green is in our bracket. I know that Kolton will come away from the match having learned more then if he blew thru a RR of C/D wrestlers.
My wrestling mentality would agree with u Dployd, we are here to wrestle, become better wrestlers and the only way we get better is to wrestle tougher comp., learn from them and practice for the next chance to meet up.
We have traveled thru weather that my friends and family think "way to bad just to wrestle". We look for and hope for the best kids to be there. The only weekend we have missed this year was when Kolton was admitted into the hospital at 3am on a Fri. morning with severe croup. So for us anyway, its just the last minute illness that keeps him away from the mats.

Sporto,

I'm not trying to call anybody out. I know people get sick, we had a wrestler scratch because of illness. Like Kolton's dad stated some might not show because the competition is not tough enough, others because it's too tough. I just wonder if posting the names is causing the scratches, either way. Burden ran a great tournament, but with 80 scratches it had to cause a lot of headaches for them.

Track wrestling is forgein to most of us, agreed?......Now I like the fact that you can see who is in your bracket prior to the matches, but if you see your bracket and scratch your kid due to you think it is too difficult, your in wrestling for all the wrong reasons...Wrestling is a sport of huge proportions take what you get by what weight and grade (a,b,c,d) you enter your child....Remember 90% of all tourneys quote"We have the the right to combine weights" You'll never know how good your kid is if he doesn't get to wrestle in a harder division (a,b,c,d,)

I think Burden ran a great tournament. I like the Trackwrestling. Even though we got to see who was in his bracket ahead of time, that let him get mentally prepared for the matches. We have always enjoyed the Central tournament and will return every year we wrestle.

I BELIEVE IT WAS PROBABLY THE WEATHER THAT CAUSED THE SCRATCHES OR SICKNESS. We went to Allen county this weekend, they did not use track wrestling or post entries, and there were 100 scratches there. I sure hope parents arent scratching there kids because of tough compitition. I have always thought that losing matches helps you learn more expessially against a really good wrestler. My son has some pretty tough kids in his 12 & under 88# division and looks forward to it every week. Of course dad is always a nervous wreck lol. In closing, tough compitition makes a better wrestler!!!!
