We saw some great wrestling yesterday in Effingham. My son was in a 5 man round robin. First and fifth place were easy to determine, but technically there was a three-way tie for second with two wins and two losses for each wrestler.
They opted to base the decision only on near fall points, leaving my son with fourth. Interestingly enough the second place wrestler (according to near fall points) is one of the kids my son beat. My son had the majority of overall points, but lacked backpoints.
I know this doesn't affect his record, only wins/losses, just curious to know how this is usually handled. When questioned, we were told this is standard, but later in the afternoon learned that they were then using total points as a deciding factor for the older kids.
Really glad there is some exciting competition for our great wrestlers...

Rule 10-3-6 In the event of a tie in a round robin, the winner will be determined based on head-to-head competition. If head-to-head competition cannot determine the winner, the winner will be determined by total points earned: Fall, forfeit, default or disqualification 4 Technical fall 3 Major decision (8 to 14 pts) 2 Decision (0 to 7 pts) 1 If the winner still cannot be determined, the total bracket will be wrestled again hope this helps.

Thanks for posting the rule.
We all know that it isn't always easy to wrestle the bracket over, so then what?
I have always went with total falls then total points scored in the matches and then time of wrestling. Probably not exactly right but at the end of a tournement the bracket can't be started over again.

Yes, thank you for the information. According to the fierce competition, this just might come up again very soon...

Okay, that makes sense... but in this case there were no actual falls (pins, right?), so they counted "near falls" (back points, right?). My son (determined 4th place) actually beat the wrestler with the most "near falls" (figured 2nd place) by decision (5-2 and ironically the only match my son actually scored any back points). All of the matches wrestled till the end, resulting in decisions.
The kids had a great time and all of the parents and coaches were patient and gracious about everything. We just told our boy to try to flip the other wrestler a little sooner/more often, beacuse when you know you can't pin 'em, back points can really add up...
Thanks for the perspective and I'm sure there is a little variance depending on the venue.
