The operative term would be "in the name of religion." In the name or religion is not a direct result of religion. I normally stay out of debates of this nature, but I also get tired of seeing real faith, (often meaning real Christianity) being blamed for things that they don't do. It is one of the reasons I distinguish the difference between religion, (which I could personally care less for) and a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, which is what real Christianity is about. In that regard, if looking specifically at the teachings of Jesus there is a great deal of difference between what religion promotes and what Jesus taught, in fact, most theologians will tell you that is the distinct difference between Christianity and other religious beliefs, most are based on what you do, Christianity is based on who you know.
I would say yes, a lot of death from religion, especially from one religion to another, the truth is, most martyrs during the reformation, (Christians), were killed at the hands and directives of others who called themselves Christian. However, their faith was based on a state system, not a relationship with Christ. If however you want to look at who gives the most to help the poor, feed the hungry, provide for those around the world that need the most help, there is no doubt, no one comes close to what Christians do. Anyone who would debate that point has no understanding of world events.
It is true there are some religions that promote hate that even promotes the destruction of the "infidels", Christianity, where Jesus is called the Prince of Peace, and calls his followers to be peacemakers, are not among those in my opinion.
