A needed lift: Anguiano win sparks Buff in dual

SCOTT CITY -- The wild weather of the morning foretold the wildness of the evening in when the Beavers took on Garden City High School in a wrestling dual.

By the time the turbulence had subsided, the Buffaloes earned a hard-fought 38-33 win.

And it was a little whirlwind named Aaron Anguiano who provided the electricity for Garden City.

The 125-pound sophomore followed Tyson Phillis, whose technical fall win at 119 had closed Scott City's early lead to 9-5. Anguiano found himself locked in a 2-2 match against Scott City senior Jesus Contreras, who was fresh off a win at the St. Francis tournament Saturday.

Contreras had scored a takedown and Anguiano an escape in the first period. Neither scored in the second. Then Anguiano scored an escape at 1:32 in the final period.

That made the score 2-2. Overtime.

Contreras had two leg holds in the first overtime, but Anguiano quickly freed himself.

Second overtime. No points.

Third overtime. Anguiano got an escape as time ran out. Match over.

It was only three points, but it was an effort that ignited his team.

"I was just thinking my team needed me. I knew we were behind in points and I knew I needed to come through for my team," Anguiano said.

He said scoring against Contreras was tough. When they were both up trying for a takedown, it was hard to get anything because Contreras was strong. Same when Anguiano was on top.

"But when I was on bottom, I had confidence of getting up, I had wrist control, got on out and got my point from there," he explained.

Aguiano's win lit a fire. Lane Greenlee gave the Buffs their first lead, 14-9, when he pinned K.C .Kough at 130 pounds early in the first period.

Braxston Medina's 3-2 win over Sam McDaniel upped the lead to 17-9. But Dakota Hayes' quick fall over Jonathan Heiman brought the Beavers back to within two, 17-15.

Then the Buff's Joey Dozier scored a tough 4-2 decision over Morgan Numrich at 145 that opened the door for his next three teammates to deliver the final blows.

Eddy Gomez, Anthony Shockley and Aaron DeLeon each scored pins, giving Garden City an insurmountable 38-15 lead.

The Beavers countered with pins of their own in the final three matches. Falls by Luke Hayes, Calvin Erven and Juan Gardea brought Scott City to within five points but by then had run out of matches.

"It was tight," GCHS head coach Monte Moser said. "When you have all those overtimes in one dual, all those one or two-point matches, that's awesome. That's what we're after."

Scott City coach Jon Lipplemann was pleased with the team effort despite the close loss. He said a dual like this against a quality opponent can only make his team better.

"It's a nice little rivalry we've got going," he said. "We know we're good and we both know we're going to see each other probably three times every year."

Moser said he found that his team has some inner strength, the ability to come back from being down, and come back and win in overtime.¬

"These young kids are talented and they're tough. They came through like big dogs tonight," he said. "That's why we like to come to Scott City. Scott City makes you better.

"I'm really not sure how good we are, but I'm slowly being convinced that we might be pretty decent."

Both teams compete this weekend at the 18-team tournament in Colby.
