ok ive been around wrestling for many years now have no kids wrestling but still like to be involved in any way i can and one thing i have been noticing is our kids cutting unsean amounts of weight i dont totaly understand the point of this im not going to point out anybody or any school but the highschool coachs who let there wrestlers drop from 119 down to 103 should be ashamed and that goes for any amount of weight cut that dramatical our younger generation is looking up to these highschool wrestlers and thinking its ok to starve themself to be better. how exacly does it make you better? can anyone explain this to me?

You know what I understand what you are saying. However alot of those kids that are 119 will weigh about 113 once wrestling starts if you diet right and when people think about wrestlers not eating that is BS they can eat all week long you have to have something in you to burn. The kids that do this have no trouble making weight its the ones that strave there selves that struggle.

Nice try kid. It is unsean (insane) how many people want to make a comment but don't have the guts to post their name. As DRAMATICAL OUR YOUNGER GENERATION IS, I'll bet your the same kid crying about Derby in the other post. Grow up, learn to write, and don't come on the site after partying all night. Ok, in fairness I have done the last suggestion, but it is still not a good idea.

the people who cut weight think if they go down to a lower weight they will have an advantage over the other kids simply because after weighins they pig out an gain all the weight back so they can have a weight advantage on the other wrestlers

i love it!! talk on cutting weight to a bunch of wrestlers and get made fun of.

wrestlers know when they are cutting TOO much weight, i promise. if done correctly and guided by a doctor it is amazing just how much weight a person can cut.
I HAVE SEEN IT.

just for some amusement and for everyones knowledge. when you jump rope and run for four hours before certification and only use .3 lbs how have no more weight to lose.

With today's rules covering hydration and only being able to lose 8% of the alpha weigh many kids are not cutting the way they used to in the past. With doctor's approval a wrestler may lose more than the 8%, thus ensuring it is healthy for the wrestler to lose more weight. Our system in Kansas may not be perfect, but I do believe it is creating a healthier atmosphere for our wrestlers.
I know Coaches constantly stress to eat a health diet, the body must be fueled to handle the grueling wrestling season.
Chocolate milk after practice, plenty of complex carbs and quality proteins. I often recommend the wrestlers have a morning and after light snack, such as fruit or bagels with low fat peanut butter.

I believe cutting some weight makes you a tougher wrestler and gives you more self control. Losing some of your fat to get to a lower weight will put you in a class were the kids aren't stronger than you. And there is a right way and wrong way to cut.

Obviously wrestling is a different sport, and if everyone cuts weight, technically no one will have an advantage over others, although the lazy wrestlers who are unwilling to sacrifice anything for the sport will be at a disadvantage..so whoever even begins to say that its not fair for the people who dont care, shouldnt be involved in the sport of wrestling to begin with..jmo

I think you hear about kids dropping 10, 15, 20, or even 25 pounds over a season. Some people really freak out about those kinds of numbers. I think it really depends on the builds of the kid.
Some kids have that kind of weight to give!!!
I know of a kid that was hurt this summer and really put on some pounds. He's better and he is back in the wrestling room and the pounds are just melting off! He will probably lose 25 pounds (if not more) this season. See, it really all depends on the person and the situation. I do think there are kids that have NO MORE TO GIVE. But, every situation should be looked at individually!
But, I think it is the coaches responsibility to keep their kids safe and know when to MAKE THEM STOP.
JMO!!

I feel that there should be a certain percentage set for the high school wrestler. It should be a safe number that all wrestlers, coaches, and schools are comfortable. If a wrestler is to exceed that percentage then he will simple need to get a doctors approval. Once a wrestler is under a doctors guidance and has the necessary approval he can go as low as the doctor feels is healthy.

isn't that what the 8% rule is after the hydration assesment. that makes me wonder why everyone can only lose the same amount of weight ( 8% ) and then when given the two pound allowance that is alot of difference for the light weights compared to the heavys

I personnally feel that the amount of weight that a wrestler loses should be determined by a doctor. If that amount is 2 percent then so be it. If that amount of weight is 20 percent the so be it. As long as it is under the guidance of a doctor. If the proper forms are signed, sealed, and delivered then lets wrestle.

I never said it was healthy, it is just the sacrifice some people make in order to excel. if they put themselves through the weight loss, they deserve the edge over other kids.

ok, me and my roomate (easy bake master) where wondering if your talking about 8lbs each week, or in a seaon? either way how is that hard on your body? how is 52 to 30 HARD? the majority of kansas wrestlers dont know the meaning of cutting weight.

if a state champion can cut from 135 to 119 when he started with 7 lbs of body fat (maybe!) then im pretty confident a chub at 52 can cut to 130.

cutting weight can be just fine if it is managed right. If you can keep most of it off its just fine but if you are fighting 6 or 8 pounds every week the whole season than you are wrestling too low for your body. Start before the season with better eating habits and lose the weight the right way.

I agree with dagwood the smart cutters will start cutting before the season and try to maintain that weight during the season. I cut 8 to 10 pounds a week for four years and im fine. It wasn't that hard you just need to know how to do it.

My roomate has it right most people dont know what it means to cut weight. And i cut weight so i could have an edge over the wrestlers who didn't cut.

I got my edge over my opponents by wrestling the best kids in the wrestling room everyday regardless of their weight. I wrestled 160 but I would wrestle all the heavier weight kids in practice so when it came time to wrestle I was use to wrestling the stronger kids
