strength is definitely a big bonus when cutting weight. When i cut to 160 few could even compare with me in the strength category, but when i wrestled 171 i was only above average strength wise. ~8/week max for freshmen-juniors is what i always advise, and ~12/week for seniors. The reasoning being they are more mature, have figured out how their body works, and it is most likely their last chance to wrestle.

so why not just cut AND wrestler the better kids? then you would have double the advantage over your opponents. thats like doing extra running because you like to eat ice cream, why not just do extra running and NOT eat ice cream? its a double win.

but i guess it really comes down to how bad you want (the edge over your opponents, not the ice cream)

I myself thought that cutting weight helped me to be tougher mentally on the mat, but as a coach I worry about weight more than anything else. It is a constant battle somtimes for certain athletes, but I do not make anyone cut weight. I also think that cutting too much is actually detremental to wrestling, you lose muscle mass and that hurts more.

Really though I jsut posted to see if my new avatar is working!

I think that the 8% rule is great, now it means that i can't go pass my mark anymore but when i was cutting weight i would not eat for days and i would feel like crap and won't want to wrestle. now the right works too, it may not work as fast as some, but you'll feel so much better and you'll work harder. I use the healthy way and i went from 189 to 171.
