What do parents look for in a kids club -- what should parents avoid?

I think that there needs to be a certain level of control in the wrestling room. The coach needs to be able to control the kids. If you walk in and the kids are not being supervised properly walk out immediately. I want my boys safe.

The knowledge level of the coaching.
The cost of being a part of that club.
The quality of wrestlers that have come up thru the club.
The number of quality training partners for your kid in the club.
The reputation of the club, the coaches, and parents. There are some clubs out there that produce some excellent wrestlers. I just would never let someone put my kid thru what they put their kids thru for something that is supposed to be fun!

What if the child is being taught good techniques and sportsmanship at practice but when tournaments come you are struggling to find someone to coach your kid? Other obligations prevent you from having a coach or you don't have enough within the club to cover the matches.

Your child should have a coach at matside when the match starts, if this doesn't happen then the ref should have the head table page a coach to your child's mat before the match starts.

if possible could you check about going to a different club in your area? If you are in a small community then that might not be possible with all the traveling that would come about for practices.

This problem is much better the being taught bad techniques & sportsmanship & having the coach there 5 matches prior to your wrestlers. IMO, mat coaching rarely wins matches whereas good practice during the week does.

I agree with you Patrick but what if they don't even go to tournaments to coach. That leaves you with no one at matside. It seems to be a common problem reading through some of the forum subjects. Kids are at tournaments but don't have a coach (with a card) there to be at matside.

Observe coaches that are from other clubs. Then approach the one that you think your wrestler will listen to & ask him to help your kid out & be matside. I have never seen a coach refuse this offer. We wrestle for Jackson County & one of the Ogden Boys coaches at least one wrestler that is not from our club at every tournament. Usually more then one. In kids club we are a big family for the most part & our goal should be to help the kid that wants help no matter where they are from. It's a great way to grow relationships.
