I missed that part. If we don't need a rule change, then who is it that is taking upon themselves to make it appear like it is a rule. District 2 said "the state says we don't do 5 man round robins"

I believe Richard's response to indicate that was wrong and we could have bracketed in 5 man round-robins.

Ned Price has told us that a State Level rule change would have to take place to allow the use of a five man round robin. According to his interpretation rules state that we use and 8 man bracket for five competitors. I have asked about this for the last four or five years. I don't have time today to read the kids constitution today...

Unless there is a rule in the NFSHSA book I do not see how a 5 man round robin is excluded from use.

Because USAWKS has a system of rules modifications and a constitution which differs from the normal seeding rules used by the NFHS rule book and any KSHSAA seeding guidelines. As an organization it has to have a slightly different set of guidelines because of the larger number of weight classes and the addition of age groups.

I personally have no opinion about whether 5 man round robins should be used or not. I've always said that if you are one of the best in the state then you'll win your matches and be there.

Thanks for clarifying that for me!

I reviewed the entire constitution. No where does it state that five wrestlers MUST be placed into a eight man, double elimination bracket or a five man round robin bracket. It has been left WIDE open. I strongly feel in order to have standardization across the state this rule:

FOLKSTYLE TOURNAMENTS
13. Rules Modifications (references to NFSHSA rules book):
Rule 10-4
In the event of a bracket with three or four wrestlers, there WILL be a round robin. In the event of a two-man bracket they will wrestle the best two out of three matches.

Should be presented as change to "In the event of a bracket with five, four, or three wrestlers there WILL be a round robin."

This small but necessary change would wipe out the gray area.

Again, I don't know why we need to mess with the constitution if it currently allows us to do what it is we want to do.

Sport0,

Why can't you, just one time, agree with me? It needs to be black and white or then the option to put them in an eight man bracket will still be out there. It SHOULD NOT be an option as it is NOT the best way to determine the best four wrestlers. A round robin is the FAIR way to determine it. Why do you have to be the only one on here not supporting a GOOD CHANGE? Just jump on the bandwagon one time! Bring your banjo!

But others do have to be told to do the right thing, because they are so afraid to do the wrong thing, that they do nothing.

Is this an insinuation that I don't do the right thing unless it is in the rules? If everyone would agree on what the right thing is then we wouldn't need any rules. It is painfully obvious to me and most of the rest of us that you just disagree to disagree even when you agree! My best defense to this situation is that the right thing has NOT been getting done so we need a rule.

I vote for the rule modification. You should not be able to receive a by to the finals. As happened at D4 South in the 16 n under 125 class. Started with 5 wrestlers in a 8 man bracket. The #2 seed did not make weight allowing the #3 seed a bye to the finals. This bracket should have been changed to a round-robin but was not. Asked district 4 if it would be changed. They said no.

I agree with Doug and Will.
Five wrestlers or less should be wrestled as a round robin.
I think it is better for the wrestlers and a better chance of getting it right.
I also think it gives those wrestlers more mat time.

In the scenario you describe the bracket should have been changed to a round-robin anyway. You had four wrestlers or less! If this was done as you describe the tournament host and director violated our standing rules!
Which gets to my point of you can make all the rules you want but you can't make people follow them. Eventually it all comes back to just do the right thing.

No changes were made on the bracket or bout sheets. Scratch was discovered when 3 n 2 seed match # came up. 3 seed checked in and was given his leg band. #2 seed never showed. 4 seed wrestled 3 times and finished third. 3 seed wrestled once and finished second!!!! This was potentially costly to the 4 seed as he was denied the chance to finish second and thus receive a bye at districts. North only had two wrestlers at this weight

I totally agree that this should have been changed to a RR bracket. The one thing that I do not agree with, and I have never liked, is getting a bye in a tournament. In my mind, getting a bye is never a good thing. I would rather have my son, or any wrestler in our club, wrestle a match than get a bye.
